Short as well, trust me, it's gonna be well worth it when chapter 3 gets here

Breckendale Shopping Center. Eagle Colorado. ‘Vail Defense Line’. September 5, 2019. Field Agent Johnston last known to be collaborating with local resistance forces. Op name N/A.

“Long arm, this is Spartan. You have two foot mobiles by the BM-21, far side of the parking lot. Grease ‘em.”
“Roger. Long arm sending. Wait one.”
Long arm lined up the shot, and gently squeezed the trigger. The M107 SASR barked in response, sending the .50 BMG hurtling at supersonic speeds. The bullet ripped through the first soldier with the ferocity of a 9mm parabellum at point blank range, and smashed into the second soldier with almost the same force. A split second later, what sounded like a thunder clap could be heard.
“Good one long arm, two down…thirty to go.” The two shadowy figures raced across the parking lot and grabbed the two bodies and hid them under the BM-21.
“Spartan, this is Long arm. Sit tight, platoon moving your way.”
“Under the BM-21. Move it.” The two resistance fighters scurried under the BM-21 with the bodies.

Pentagon emergency war room. Washington D.C. August 30, 2019. Field Agent Johnston attached to President Sanderson. Op name N/A.

“Mr. President, we believe that Belechov is behind the recent Chinese Incursion on the West Coast.”
“Why would a Russian business man be controlling the Chinese military? They would never stand for that.”
“Sir we think he has sufficiently corrupted the Chinese government in order to facilitate this.”
“Damnit Mr. Johnston, all I’m hearing is beliefs and thoughts! Innocent Civilians are dying out there! What do you know?”
Johnston was knocked back by the sudden outburst of emotion from the president.
“Sir, we know Belechov will be in Eagle Colorado in the next week. All I need from you is a battalion of Marines and air support, and we can capture him.”
“A battalion of Marines? Are you out of your mind? I can barely sustain my personal detail, what in the hell makes you think I can send a battalion of Marines, not to mention the aircraft.”
“This is our best chance to grab Belechov. We can stop this, as long as we go in hard and fast.”
“Son, we can barely hold the line. I’m not even sure if the Army and Marine Corps even exist anymore. I can get you a helicopter to take you to the S.O.B., nothing else.”
“Yes sir. One last thing sir.”
“Yes Mr. Johnston?”
“You were at the Fort Knox MOUT facility in 2007, correct?”
Sanderson leaned forward in his chair, looking somewhat concerned.
“In late 2007, a group of Spetznaz troops trained at that very facility, is that correct?”
“Yes it is, I don’t see what you’re getting at.”
“One of the operatives died there, in what the DOD called a freak accident. However, upon closer investigation, the Russians determined that it was you that made the mistake that killed that operative.”
“I did no such thing!”
“That operative’s name was Yuri Belechov, he was Andrei Belechov’s younger brother.”
“What?”
“Belechov want’s revenge. He’s going to take you and the country out in one fell swoop, Mr. President.”
Before Sanderson could respond, an Air Force Lieutenant burst into the room.
“Sir! EWADS picked up five plus TU-96 Bear Foxtrots heading for D.C., you need to leave.”
Both Johnston and Sanderson stood up and looked at each other.
“Johnston, you get to Andrews. You kill that bastard, and bring me his head. Godspeed son.”
“Yes sir, will do.”
Johnston was rushed out by the Secret Service and ferried to Andrews AFB, and on board a C-130. They cleared the AFB, and proceeded west. Johnston looked out at Washington D.C., and was interrupted by a crew member handing him goggles.
“Might need these sir.”
“What for?”
“Just put them on.”
He put the goggles on and turned back towards the view of D.C.. Just then the whole afternoon sky lit up, enveloping the plane in a deathly heat. Moments later, the C-130 was hit by a massive blast of hot air. The process repeated three times, all around the D.C. area, as the entire city was systematically wiped out by hydrogen bombs.

Wouldn't a nuclear attack on the United States warrant a full scale strategic response?

Indeed it would, but most of our SSBNs and Silos had already been destroyed.

Stuff is progressing too fast, slow down and describe the visual situation.
