My first model rocket launch

Posted 05-14-2012 at 11:50 AM by SiberianTiger

Wow, yesterday I have taken part in a 13th Raketfest (rocket festival) organized by a group of Moscow-based amateur rocket makers. That was the 1st real launch of a rocket-like thing I made myself!

To be humble enough, I must say it was made out of a ready model kit by Estes. Still, it gave me enough fun while I customized the "skin"

Mine is 1st in the row on the picture:

Another one was smaller, with a red nose.

Both rockets flew very well and landed in fine shape.

Launch location was at about N 55.614, E 35.822

Truly awesome was another one, named the Troll:

It then dug a 15 cm deep hole in the ground on impact!

Cool ! I'd like to try that one day.

But its forbidden here, no fun.

Your rockets look very fine and reliable, I'm not surprised they flew as planned. I would be a little more sceptical about the second one in the row, the orange one that reminds me a Delta4-5-2 rocket. Did it flew well too ?

What's the prob? Make a trip to Russia, finally! ;-)

Actually, it was not too simple for the organizers to do this festival. My friend (who did all that) had to arrange things very seriously at Lubyanka and at RosAeroNavigatsiya (Russian Air Navigation office), and two airfields, including military Kubinka airfield, were officially shut down while we were having fun!

Mine were only two rockets there. :-)

Ha-ha, there were some things you'd not call reliable there, LOL!

It actually was a paper replica of H-IIA, made by the bald guy in the picture below. It flew up well, but I don't remember how well did it land. I have to watch the videos again.

This is going to happen, and you know it Just a matter of time & money

Edit : well, actually there are go-and-back flights from Paris to Moscow for less than 250€. I would have guessed it would be more in the 1000€ range.

If you will grow a serious intention, come to me, and I'll make sure you'll get here in time for the next Raketfest. Preliminarily, it's to happen in August.

August, I'll be in holidays . I'll think seriously to it, that would be a nice break. I'll make my plans in early June.

The propelled Sputnik is especially fun. Has anyone launched the Probe yet ? The R7 looks nice too.

Gathering even more international participants would be just great. Especially if they come with their own rockets (not sure how customs would like it, though).

The flying Probe sounds like a cool idea, if I convince the Sputnik maker to make one!
