Ad Terram in Luna [Chapter5] - a space story by SE

Posted 05-14-2012 at 07:18 PM by Samuel Edwards

For those who like to read my story, here is a new post!

This chapter is a bit boring than the others as I do not want to rush into the next major event in the story. Enjoy!

"Ad Terram in Luna”

“To Land on the Moon”

“The Exploits of Three Men, and the Moon"

[Chapter5]

Tensions Intensify

“Mission Control, we are in orbit!” said John over the radio. Everyone in the control room started shouting joyfully. “We made it everyone!” shouted the announcer. “Good work, John.” I said. “Hey George, how about we make ourselves a little bet?”

“Sure, why not?”

“No matter what happens, and no matter what the circumstances; I bet you One-hundred dollars that I’ll land this hunk of metal on the center line of that runway when I get back.”

“Ha ha; you, sir, have yourself a bet.”

“Now get some rest, man. I’ll be back to collect my “Benjamin” in five days.”

“…Yeah, right.” I said with a smile.

When we left the control room we walked to the elevator. “Well, I’m glad they made it into orbit.”

“You and me both.” Kelly said “I’ll bring you back to your living quarters, Mr. Dawson.”

“That’ll be much appreciated, Kelly.”

We got into my car and she started the engine. “George, my father didn’t tell you, but he gave you the rest of the day off.”

“Oh? That’s nice of him. He gave the underclass a day off; how…unlike him?”

“That’s what I thought, but I guess it’s in his personal interest.”

“I know what you mean, Kelly.”

As soon as Kelly started driving, my phone rang. “Dick Mills?”

“Hello, Dick? Where have you been? You and Rob seemed to have disappeared over the last few hours. What’s going on?”

“You’re asking me, George? What’s going on with you? I heard that you were shot!”

“That is a true statement. How are you guys holding off?”

“Well, we have mostly been attacked by Clarkson. The pig-headed son of a…” I cut him off.

“Hold your tongue man, his daughter is in the car with me.”

“Uh…um… I’m sorry, Kelly.” He said in a small voice.

“It’s quite all right.” She said.

“So where are you going, George?”

“Clarkson gave me the day off, so Kelly is taking me home right now. I’ll see you there?”

“Maybe; I’m stuck in the simulator with Robert right now. They had to reprogram the simulator, so I had time to call you and… I got to go, Bye!”

“Talk to you later, bye.”

I hung up. “Well, you fellows sure don’t seem to like my father very much.” Kelly said with a serious disposition. “He is okay, I just don’t like the way he treats us.” “What do you mean?” she continued. “For instance, he calls us ‘underclasses’. I mean, just because I’m new at Wideawake doesn’t make him any better than me or say Dick or anyone else for that matter.”

“Well, I don’t think you are an underclass if that counts for anything. I think what my father is trying to do by calling you and underclass is to intimidate you. You know, make you work harder so he might think more highly of you.”

“You might be right. I never thought of it like that before.”

Only a humming of the car’s engine could be heard as we kept driving.

As soon as she parked in the lot, Kelly helped me out of the car. We both walked down the hall to my door and I opened it.

“Ladies first” I said with a smile

“Thank you”
“Well, I guess you had better get back to work.” I said

“Screw work for today! They can do their job without me. I’m staying here with you.” She exclaimed.

[Meanwhile]

“…No, 90 degrees; turn to 90 degrees!” yelled Mr. Clarkson. “Do it right you miserable…”

“That does it!” Dick interrupted

Dick got up from the seat and walked out of the Simulator.

“Mr. Clarkson!”

“What do you want? Get back in the damned simulator, boy.”

“Dammit Clarkson, quit telling us how to do our job. We know what we are doing; we don’t need you to tell us how to land on the moon.

Everyone in the building stopped what they were doing and it became deathly quiet.

“I am sick and tired of you always talking down to us. Here we are risking our lives to perform a mission that YOU want executed, and you don’t even give us the respect and quietness we need to prepare ourselves for this mission!” continued Dick

“You little piece of…”

“Dick! Clarkson! Stop acting so childish! Shut up both of you and get back to work. We’ve got a mission to train for, and you two fighting isn’t helping anyone!” yelled HASSESA Founder James Edwards.

Everyone went back to work without saying a word. Dick returned into simulator.

“Clarkson surely was lucky that Edwards came out. He was about to see my fingerprints up close.” Dick announced to Rob.

“You are probably screwed now.”

“Well, so are you.”

“George too man. We are all screwed cause of you. I encourage you to think first before speaking to Mr. Clarkson again.”

“You’re right. Let’s get back to work now. We’ll go to George’s later and give him the news.”

[Meanwhile, back at George’s quarters]

“Wow, you live like a king on this island, George!”

“What do you mean, Kelly? I live hardly any different than anyone else here.”

“George, obviously you have never seen my quarters. I have a small closet, a bathroom, hardly a kitchen at all, and a room the size of a school bus; it’s barely livable.”

“That sure sounds cramped.” I said.

“It is very cramped.”

Kelly walked into my bedroom.

“Hmm, I’m feeling a little jealous.” She said with a smile.

“Maybe you can stay here?” I asked her

All Kelly could do was smile. She walked toward a window and just stared out at the coast line.

“Yeah but my father…”

“You aren’t your father” I interrupted.

“I…I… do not wish to discuss this any further, Mr. Dawson.” She said bluntly.

We just sat and glared at each other. Neither of us could think of what to say next. Suddenly, the phone rang startling Kelly. On the line was a furious Mr. Clarkson.

“Who’s there please?” I began

“George, get over to the simulator now.”

“Sir, you gave me the day off and I don’t think I’m…”

“Oh right, you got shot. I don’t give a darn, get over here now!”

“Yes sir.” I said with a sigh.

I placed the phone back on its cradle and got up.

“I’m starting to understand why you hate my father.” Kelly said

“It’s not a matter of hating your father, or vice versa. It’s a matter of figuring out what Dick did this time.”
