Heisenberg Might Have Been Here

Posted 11-06-2010 at 08:05 PM by IgnoreThisBarrel

Well, I made some major improvements to the mesh and code, although I can't get some of the animations to work.

Added features are:
Working, animated, gear. Although they look like bent toothpicks.
Landing points and updated center of gravity so the Heisenberg can now land.
Hover thrusters.
Custom exhaust textures (although I can't get the ship to use them).
Main docking port now retractable.
Heat shielded hangar bay, large enough to hold a small vessel. I'll make it larger so it can hold DGIV-sized vessels.
Heat shield is (supposed to be) openable so vessels can dock, it also has a semi-transparent texture.
A window in the docking bay, shaded, to protect you from that dangerous sunlight.
The camera has been moved to behind that window. So if you don't like how your view is obscured I may add a cockpit in a different place.
4 RCS thruster blocks, although I'm not sure If I'm going to use them due to limitations of spacecraft3.
Solar panels, that would have a deploying/retracting animation if I could get the animations to work.

    Here's my opinion.
I think it needs a few more docking ports, these sorts of vessels are usually designed to dock other vessels to and use them to ferry cargo and crew to the surface of planets.
I noticed the roll thrusters seem to be too powerful.
The view looking out the window should be a Virtual Cockpit while the normal view remains un-obstructed.

Other than that I'm sure when it's textured it'll be a great addition to anyone's Deepspace vessel 'collection'.

    Darren

Edit: I don't see why a vessel like this needs a heat shield. These sorts of vessels usually remain in orbit as a 'Mothership' of sorts.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm planning on adding more docking ports, but being very obsessive about their placing (don't want to ruin the PMI balance, after all).

As for the heat shield, it's for traveling through nebulae at high velocities

Hey there Orion Nebula is there a hole in you? No? Now there is.

Why don't you place the docking ports at the CoG?

You should try making a basic DLL for it. It really isn't that much harder than a Spacecraft3 INI, once you have the environment set up.

Try taking a look at the ShuttlePB sample code; it looks surprisingly like a config file.

I'd try if I new how to compile DLL files or code in C/C++

Any good step-by-step tutorials out there you know of?

Or is C knowledge even required for coding vessels?

If you have MS Visual Studio (2008 or 2010, either works and both are free) you simply right-click on the project in the solution bar and select 'build.' A module appears in the directory you specify.

Computerex has an excellent video tutorial on setting up your environment, here:

    Orbiter doesn't use C.

Ah, thanks! I always get C, C++ and LUA mixed up.
