Pics from Raketfest #15 / Skyfest 2012
In Russia, certification and registering of an ultra-light aircraft is still "optional". Which paves road for disasters like this.Posted 09-14-2012 at 11:19 AM by SiberianTiger

Sorry to hear about what happened...airshows in general are great events, so it's sad to hear about this tragedy.
The problem with ultralight aircraft is that, as far as I have understood, they are certified to "lesser" standards than regular aircraft.Posted 09-14-2012 at 08:30 AM by Fabri91

I wished you had been there too.
But that's surely not the last "fest"!
The aircraft was equipped with a safety parachute for the trike. I have seen it extended on the lines, but still not opened, on the ground. They were simply too low for it to deploy. I have been told that the pilot was found with the chute's safety pin in his hand (I didn't inspect his body in great detail, you know). That's too bad that his 20 years of flying experience ended like that.Posted 09-12-2012 at 06:56 PM by SiberianTiger

Very nice pictures. I wish I was there.
That crash is a tragedy, though. To be honest, I never trusted those kind of ultra-light aircrafts very much. Even if they had carried parachutes, 200 meters was too low to bail out.

Russian Air Force 100th anniversary
Thanks!
I have bought a zoom lens last spring keeping a possible air show in mind. And it came handy this time.Posted 08-17-2012 at 04:49 PM by SiberianTiger

Russian Air Force 100th anniversary
The Great Tennessee Airshow in Smyrna is always pretty good. For the past two years I've went, they've had one of the military demo teams come up and fly.Quote:Yes! Very nice. The wife's pictures are very good as well.
I love the smoke and noise of airshows. Sadly Chattanooga doesn't know how to put on a good one. But I've been known to drive to Pensacola in November just to see the Blue Angel's "Homecoming" show.
I'm a big fan of the Skytyper's too, flying the old SNJ-6. Airshows rock!
The Blue Angels killed any competition the Thunderbirds could have offered, IMO.
Anyways, great pics and blog, SiberianTiger!Posted 08-16-2012 at 09:11 PM by Eli13

Russian Air Force 100th anniversary
Looks like it was a fantastic show. I also love air shows, and we get a few good USAF ones every year or so. Actually, I went to one at an Air Force Base south of me and they had a fantastic variety of planes flying, including the F-15C, F-22A, F/A-18F, E-8 JSTARS, C-5, C-130, and the Blue Angels Navy demo team. Great show all in all.Posted 08-16-2012 at 03:47 PM by Codz

Unfortunately, this time we have missed the first half of the show, when some old aircraft replica were flying (including Bleriot monoplane from 1912, see the pics! http://users.livejournal.com/___lin_...77.html#cutid1)
It so happened that not even flyable MiG-15 was found in Russia, so, like most other restored and replicated planes on display, it was borrowed from a private collection of some American.
One guy who accompanied us told us he was excited to see the B-25 flying, because his grand-dad was fighting Nazis as a crewman of one of those (but his plane wasn't such shiny

Best pics from my vacation (part 2)
That looks like a nice tall cave. Was the reddish color real or is just from lighting? Where is it/what's it's name?Posted 07-13-2012 at 10:16 AM by Marvin42
