Playing with simple autopilots

Posted 04-10-2013 at 07:19 PM by george7378

Hi everyone!

I've been trying to improve my 3D Moon landing sim over the past few weeks and one thing I wanted to try and get right was autopilots. Nothing fancy - just simple AP functions like Killrot, Horizon level and Attitude hold - things which are useful while you're doing a manual descent to the Moon. The first AP I tried to create was the simplest - Killrot. Here was my initial thought:

- When the user activates Killrot, measure the lander's angular velocity...

3D Moon landing sim

Posted 03-18-2013 at 10:32 PM by george7378

Hi everyone!

I'm home for the Easter, and I've also started on a new project that's going pretty well. It's a 3D moon landing simulator, made using the DirectX stuff I've been learning lately. It's at a stage where I can post some screenshots:

More DirectX stuff

Someone asked in the last post about the tutorials I used. It was a combination of a few - I started with this one:

http://www.directxtutorial.com/LessonList.aspx?listid=9

It's good at explaining and it's good for me because I usually learn better when I have some full code to look at to summarise the point, and which builds up in complexity in each tutorial, but that site has been slammed for not error checking. If you use that site alone you'll eventually run into...

Attempts at DirectX

Posted 01-20-2013 at 01:22 AM by george7378

Well it's been a while since I've tried something new in the world of programming! I am always learning new things, but I rarely decide to try and make the jump from programming in a very basic graphics engine such as GDI+ (which I've been using so far) into programming in a professional display engine like DirectX.

I found a good tutorial recently though (after a lot of looking), and I managed to create my first 3D program which displays a rotating pyramid lit by a point source of...

First term completed

Posted 12-28-2012 at 06:37 PM by george7378

I know that a lot of people probably aren't interested in 'life updates' and things like that when they have their own lives to live, but I'm gonna post one anyway

I finished my first term of university a few weeks ago, and wow - it has gone SO quickly. I can't believe it's been months when it feels like weeks since I started in October. The work hasn't been too bad - yes the pace is much quicker than at school (we probably spent at least a month or two learning how to use complex...
