I'm not really a physicist and didn't understand half of it but I'll start a thread anyway.

So, apparently it's not only CERN working on the tiny stuff but also Japan and China. And they've apparently found a new subatomic particle now called Zc(3900). The weird thing about Zc(3900)? It appears to consist of four quarks instead of three like protons or neutrons!

This article says:

Quote:

Initial indications are that Zc(3900) is indeed a previously unknown type of matter—a particle with four quarks. Combined, the research teams have found 460 examples of the Zc(3900) particle giving serious credence to their actual existence. Thus far, the particle appears to have an electric charge and at least one charm and one anti-charm quark. Both teams suspect that it also has an up and anti-down quark as well, giving it its full complement of four quarks.

Both research teams point out that there might be other explanations for their findings—Zc(3900) could simply be a pair of two-quark particles bound together, for example. Another possibility is that it's a pair of two-quark particles that are loosely bound, which would mean they are simply interacting for a very short time span.

And some abstract physics jibberish I'm too stupid to understand...

Apparently there are also other candidates for the status of a tetraquark and now comes the part where I haven't studied enough physics again:
What would it mean to our current understanding of physics if there are these tetraquarks and they actually exist? Is the current quark model to inaccurate or even false? What could it change in our current understanding of physics?

I'm trying to change my Low Earth Orbit's inclination with a Moon slingshot in TransX.

Is this possible to setup with TransX completely before leaving LEO?

What I've tried so far is to setup the Moon slingshot and in stage 3 set a dummy ship as target which is exactly in the orbit I want to transfer to in the first place.
I set the "Intercept with" and "Graph projection" variable of stage 3 in the attached screenshot to "Focus".

I just cannot get to grips with how I have to align the orbits in this view and why the Closest Approach value in this view is not updated after I amend the maneuver in stage 1 as in the Encounter view for example?
Do I have to align the white intersect line with the two yellow dashed lines as in the maneuver plan?

This BBC article got me thinking: If you fell out of an airplane from 7km with no parachute, and find yourself with a bit of spare time before impact, what should you do to maximise your chances of survival?

I guess the first order of business is reducing the terminal velocity, so spread out extremities, maybe use clothing for increasing drag ... But on the other hand, spreading out might make the body more vulnerable on impact, so maybe roll up at the last moment?

Also, what's the best position to hit the ground? Feet first, sacrificing your legs for protecting vital organs?

Finally, what's the best surface to hit? Water, deep snowdrifts, dense foliage? Water seems a good choice, but it's incompressible, and at your impact velocity it may not allow sufficient displacement. The BBC article didn't mention any survival stories from high altitude into water, but this may be because people drowned even after surviving the drop.

Of course you might argue that the chance of survival is so minimal that it's not worth spending precious seconds on it. Better letting your life flash past your eyes, or watching the spectacular scenery ...

Bit morbid topic, sorry about that. Memento mori ...

Hey everyone,

So I wanted to start a thread to ask about any memorable flights that you've had in Orbiter.

I guess I should go first. I probably have a couple of wild flights that I was happy to finish alive, but without question the trickiest was my "deorbit to the pad" at my old base in Ecuador, using a UCGO Shuttle-A.

The goal for me was to de-orbit my Shuttle-A safely onto one of the VTOL pads that you can see right in the middle of the picture, on the other side of the runway. (The base was the Titicaca one BTW). This was tough because the ship was loaded up with lunar ore cargo, and low on fuel after a trip to the moon & back. My flight skills were also a fair bit less polished, and I had trouble understanding AerobrakeMFD at the time. I recall that landing the sucker properly took quite a few tries, mostly either dropping in much too early, or overshooting into central South America. Finally, on about try 60-80, I finally managed to pinpoint my descent to the right spot. Using the hovers & my aux pods, I managed to kill my horizontal speed after overshooting the base by a little bit, but I ran out of fuel before I could align to the pad properly, and landed on the grass about 50 m from it. (I later discovered that the aux pods throttle had been stuck open at about 0.4 N forward, screwing up an otherwise perfect landing)

So whats your story?

:hailprobe:

Hi Everyone:

I'm sure I'm missing something basic. I'm using velcro rockets to simulate my rocket project. I put my .cfg file in Orbiter2010\Config\Vessels\Velcro. I assume that file is okay because when I Launch Orbiter ]-> Ctrl-f4] -> Custom] -> Scenario Editor]-> New. I'm able to search out my .cfg file, instant a new spacecraft, but when the scenario editor gets to the screen where you set the free flight and ground information, the program locks up.

I checked to make sure it was not a .cfg error by using an existing .msh file. It then worked fine. So I'm pretty confident the .msh file is the problem child and not the .cfg.

I'm trying two different approaches here. I'd really like to use my solidworks models as the artwork for my vehicle. I've tried saving my assemblies as a .stl (Stereo lithography format.) and then used gmesh and blender to convert the .stl file into a .msh file. No dice, same crash as I mentioned above.

I also tried FreeCad. I was a bit surprised to find out that FreeCad can't save to .msh so I saved to various formats with the same effect. Again in all my file types I had to convert to .msh with gmesh or blender. Again, all attempts failed in the same way as before.

What cad packages do you folks use to get a successful .msh file used for your sims? If you don't use a file direct out of a cad file, can you let me know your conversion path from cad to .msh file that works?

Thanks
Andrew
