Youtube embedding with HTML5
Embed youtube videos "the recommended" and more portable way

Hi there,

wouldn't it be better / nicer to use the 'standard' recommended way of embedding
youtube videos with an <iframe> tag instead of the "shockwave-flash only" way?

I am trying to get rid of the flash player wherever I can and it would be nice
if this could be done.

I don't think this will introduce any cons, 'cause the <iframe>-Method will
still select the flash-player for those clients who have installed it.

So in general you have to exchange the old:

HTML Code:
<object width="425" height="350">
    <param value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TPxdBG0XATY&amp;fs=1&amp;start="
           name="movie">
    <param value="true" name="allowFullScreen">
    <embed width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" allowfullscreen="true"
           type="application/x-shockwave-flash"
           src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TPxdBG0XATY&amp;fs=1&amp;start=">
  </object>
... by:

HTML Code:
  <iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""
          src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TPxdBG0XATY?vq=auto">
  </iframe>
The video ID (TPxdBG0XATY) is chosen arbitrary here
And the "vq" (video-quality) parameter is optional, too. But setting it to auto seems to be best.

I would really like to see this (by the way recommended way) implemented.

P.S.: If anyone fears the new, a user-setting (HTML5 vs. Flash) might be the way to go.

I mean, sure - this is handled by a vBulletin plugin that's probably quite out of date, it might well have an HTML 5 approach in later revisions. Would be the easiest way to accomplish what you're after.

Thanks!
And now for the obvious question: when?

Unfortunately we have the latest version of AME we can install into this version of VBulletin. To update it would require a base board upgrade, which is not an action we would look to undertake just now.

...to bad. Any chance this could be implemented in a less big change?
Note: This is not extremely important, though. So if you have "bigger" problems, fix them first!
Thanks for the feedback

Youtube HTML updated to the HTML5 player. Also adjusted the regex to grab HTTPS links.

Edit: Updated again to add youtu.be link matching.

Hmm one question (sorry):
Can you explain, why this post is working (HTML5 preview)
while this one isn't?

The former is using Auto Media Embedding with posted simply a link to the video, the latter is using [youtube] BBcode instead.

We may be able to amend the bbcode tag too, I didn't realise that existed!
