Thumbs up Finally Orbiter & D3D9 in Linux thanks to PlayOnLinux

In recent years I've been following various Linux guides found here on OF (thanks to their authors). Maybe it was me, not a Linux expert, maybe my distro was messed...
We all know that Linux world is quite...heterogeneous (so to say) so I never had any success...UNTIL NOW!

Thanks to Flow I finally found this guide:
http://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/t...tor-guide.452/

I have Mint 17.3 Cinnamon and Orbiter2010-P1 just works!
Another buddy at FOI is very satisfied with it too, on his KDE Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS (Trusty Tahr).

There are some glitches with textures that we're trying to sort out, but it runs!
Next task: Orbiter2016.

Thanks again Flow!

Remember that you can use PlayOnLinux's debugger to find errors in the search for better compatibility.
Regards.

@Ripley:

What are your machine specs?

I'm running Mint 17.3 as well, have never been able to get Orbiter to run with this procedure or any other. I *think* I am up against an unsupported Intel graphics issue with the Atom processors (on board graphics).

You're welcome Ripley

Really glad I could help - this was the one guide that sorted things for me.

Linux can be challenging and I still have the odd bug or filename issue but not anything that hasn't been able to be ironed out.

Like I said before if you have any specific problems PM me or post up here and I'll try my best to help.

Not tried Orbiter2016 yet but hopefully it will work just as well.

You've done great if you've got it going on AMD Radeon graphics - they are notoriously difficult on Linux.

Is it planet textures you're having glitches with? This was the one problem I had on my old machine with onboard radeon graphics - never could solve it in Mint and ended up on Ubuntu instead.

No graphics problems at all with the on chip graphics on the I5 Intel I use now though.

Well, thanks, but I really didn't do anything more than following that guide.

Exactly. No matter what I try, planets are plain balls. Best I could do was this, with the official KSC_HiRes textures...

A buddy at FOI (with Ubuntu) has more or less the same problems.

I tried it again and get "computer not good enough for D3DX9" and it fails, as usual. I had Orbiter running on this very machine (it's an Asus netbook, but still) when I had Windows XP on it, plenty of gas.

Really depressing.

Just the same for me - no clouds, no textures yet this was the one and only problem.

Really hope you find a solution as it's so frustrating when it's just one thing. Strange thing for me is they did load OK with Ubuntu but I really don't like Ubuntu!

Sorry you still haven't fixed it - I looked into it again after our last discussion but couldn't come up with anything new to suggest. I'm very much an amateur with Linux but have had some lucky successes.

Is D3DX9 optional or necessary for wine? I was not using that when I was running on XP.

Attempting to run just Orbiter (clean install, linked to orbiter.exe) I get the following error from Orbiter:

I get this no matter what video option I select.

The debug from PlayOnLinux:

I only launched Orbiter_ng.exe.

I don't know why, but if I launch plain orbiter.exe, it just shows an empty Launchpad, and when I close it, it crashes. Could have been me, messing something with the shortcuts from POL interface, I don't know.

Not sure if it will help (not Linux), but the "Initialising 3D client with hardware device failed . . . " error . . . I have found this happening with the inline client on both Orbiter2010 and the beta. For me it happened/happens when using (or attempting to use) a 27" 2560x1440 monitor via orbiter.exe. This despite a rather more powerful setup and a(2) GTX670 GFX . A 1980x1200 works ok. Setting lower res on the bigger monitor also works with the inline.

i believe highres needs at least DX9 and DX9 capable GFX - therefore the D3DX9 client (and D3DX9 needs some grunt behind it) And Ripley, you are using a 27", not so?

Yep, 27" @1920x1080.
Wasn't there a (very) recent thread where it was talked about the horizontal resolution limit of D3D7?

Edit: found something. Not recent, but this is it.

Indeed - thanks - didn't find that when I was looking when I got the message. Like the bit about you'd be talking 30 inch to use over 2054 width. Times change.

But then doesn't explain your graphics/texture issues if you are using 1920x1080 ;-(

Just tried and for me it's optional. Loaded and ran fine - only difference apart from the obvious lower texture quality was a lower frame rate.

Looking at your Orbiter error message have you tried allocating more system RAM to the graphics or launching Orbiter in a lower resolution window?
