[slightly off-topic] Anybody here working on the Shuttle payloads of the 1990s (or roughly most payloads between 1998 and 2003)? [/slightly off-topic]

Yes, but that one lacks the large platform for smaller experiments, but adds a more modular multi-purpose architecture.

True, though both were based around the use of payloads fitted to standard Spacelab pallets, I've posted examples earler (See: Post 22 & Post 26)

One other unflown pallet payload I've recently uncovered is an experimental 30m diameter radio antenna which would have been deployed in a manner not too different to an umbrella.

Your urge is at least only coming with minor implications for your environment.

I have the urge to get this valar-damned new development PC ASAP.

Here is another pallet based payload, this was an Earth observations system, using microwave radiometry. The other item shown in the payload bay view is apparently an OMS kit, an item I'm still researching.

A large satellite to be used to measure soil moisture. One means of construction would have been to use beam building equipment (See Post 27 - 28 in this thread).

Quote:
A large passive microwave radiometer spacecraft with near all-weather capability of monitoring soil moisture for global crop forecasting has been designed. The design, emphasizing large space structures technology, characterized the mission hardware at the conceptual level in sufficient detail to identify enabling and pacing technologies.

The study concentrated on those research areas requiring the most intense attention: mission and spacecraft requirements, design and structural concepts, electromagnetic concepts, and control concepts.

The results of the study in these research areas are presented in 14 papers authored by members of the design study team. Drawings of the baseline spacecraft design are included in an appendix.

A few more early pallet payloads.

Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF, 1976)

This is the original version of the Spicer Space Telescope which started life as a pallet payload in the 1970's.

Bioresearch Module

In 1971 Vought submitted to NASA a report discussing modifications to a proposed Scout launched biosatellite. In the modified versions three missions (1, 1s & 2) would be launched by Scout LVs and retrieved by space shuttles. The final mission (3) would be launched from a shuttle mission. This report predates the finalisation of the shuttle design and so if created modifications may be needed.

This document comprises the final report for NASA-MSFC contract NAS8-31147, Integrated Control/Display Station for Teleoperator and Experiments. Under this study the control and display requirements for the operation, checkout and test of 19 typical payloads controlled from the Orbiter aft flight deck (AFD) have been defined.

The principal means of investigation were to utilize existing documentation (MSFC, other NASA and contractor studies), conduct working sessions with cognizant payload personnel, and perform design studies and tradeoff analyses where appropriate.

An unflown payload from the 1980s.

30/20GHZ Technology Satellite

Proposed modification of the Hughes LEASAT spacecraft to test an advanced communication system. Documents provide much information on the test mission and would allow the simulation of both this unflown spacecraft and the LEASAT spacecraft which were launched from various missions by Discovery & Columbia.

Not sure if the item below flew in some form or not. However the proposed 'micropallets' could make an interesting add-on.

Ion beam plume and efflux characterization flight experiment study

Quote:
A flight experiment and flight experiment package for a shuttle-borne flight test of an 8-cm mercury ion thruster was designed to obtain charged particle and neutral particle material transport data that cannot be obtained in conventional ground based laboratory testing facilities. By the use of both ground and space testing of ion thrusters, the flight worthiness of these ion thrusters, for other spacecraft applications, may be demonstrated. The flight experiment definition for the ion thruster initially defined a broadly ranging series of flight experiments and flight test sensors. From this larger test series and sensor list, an initial flight test configuration was selected with measurements in charged particle material transport, condensible neutral material transport, thruster internal erosion, ion beam neutralization, and ion thrust beam/space plasma electrical equilibration. These measurement areas may all be examined for a seven day shuttle sortie mission and for available test time in the 50 - 100 hour period.
