Default Astronaut model question

Hello I'm new here. Though I still know very little, I've been enjoying Orbiter for quite awhile now.

I have a question about astronaut models. Is it very hard to reskin an existing astronaut or are there any astronaut models out there that can be used as a replacement?

I would love to have a military themed astronaut for addons such as the Dyna Soar. Would it be hard to paint the existing skin to look more military, maybe in an orange color similar to the SR-71 pilot suits?

Thank you.

if you know photoshop, it's not that much of an issue...

if you don't, it probably is.

I'm starting to attemp to learn GIMP. I recently made a new Prelude II skin which I'm excited about as its my first add on.

How do I access the astronaut and what kind of file would it be in? For example, where is the astronaut file located for the Dyna Soar addon? I believe the model used for this addon is the same as the one used for Project Gemini.

If the mesh is using a cylindrical UV map, then what you can do is open the mesh file of that vessel, which is located inside root/meshes/ folder, with notepad, scroll down all the way and look at the texture file it's using. Then you can get a dds to bmp converter, such as this one: http://eliteforce2.filefront.com/fil...onverter;29412, and convert the texture file to bmp. Open the bmp with a image manipulation program of your choice, modify it as you please, and save it. Then convert it to dds by using the dtex utility that comes with Orbiter. The DG is a perfect example of this.

However I don't know how you would go about doing it if the model has each individual materials textured separately.

You might want to visit this page, has links to a couple useful utilities: http://orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?p=5800#post5800
