I was browsing the web when I saw this article. Of course, I got a good laugh from it. The ability of people to scheme up new ways of making money amazes me, it really does. I'm interested in seeing what comes of this, because this lady clearly thinks she has it all figured out legally. Excerpt from the article:

"There was no snag, I backed my claim legally, I am not stupid, I know the law. I did it but anyone else could have done it, it simply occurred to me first."

The document issued by the notary public declares Duran to be the "owner of the Sun, a star of spectral type G2, located in the centre of the solar system, located at an average distance from Earth of about 149,600,000 kilometers."

Duran, who lives in the town of Salvaterra do Mino, said she now wants to slap a fee on everyone who uses the sun and give half of the proceeds to the Spanish government and 20 percent to the nation's pension fund.
Looks like all those photosynthesizing organisms out there better cough up some cash

I read somewhere on the actual treaty on the UN site saying clearly persons.

The 1967 Outer Space Treaty is pretty clear on that.

Article II - Outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.

He should try to sue me for claiming that I own the sun as well. Might get funny. Only very few countries did not sign this treaty and those who did not have no judges that you can take for serious in international space law... those judges are more skills in cases like "She is a witch! Kill her!"

You can't put a claim on something you haven't even stepped on. My recommendation to the poor soul is to try and put a flag on the celestial body first...

I hereby claim that I claimed the sun as the legal property of Orbiter-Forum, usage of said star thereafter to be free to use for all members of aforementioned forum for as long as the star remains active and the sole source of natural light and heat for the planet on which the forum is based. In addition, members of Orbiter-Forum are free to plan trips to the sun, provided they take them only at night to avoid excessive heat, and to take samples of stellar material including solar wind for consumption and experimentation both in space and at home.

It is scribbled somewhere on a piece of paper which I wrote down three years before I even joined this forum. :)

Mmm... that's some good solar wind.

Also I claim Jupiter, along with all it's resources, it's moons and their resources, for O-F, for as long as it exists, in the name of the Probe.

You know what the real madness of this is? That a court of professional judges, paid by someones taxes, actually HAS to take the case up and at least spend an hour on it to get the right paragraphs together to conclusively show that the claim is invalid by current law, while the claim is clearly invalid on the pure grounds of sane reasoning. Sometimes I really wonder what an abomination of a bureaucracy we made of the high ideal of justice...

I hereby claim that I claimed the moon as the legal property of Orbiter-Forum, usage of said moon thereafter to be free to use for all members of aforementioned forum for as long as the moon remains in orbit and the sole natural satellite of the planet on which the forum is based. In addition, members of Orbiter-Forum are free to plan trips to the moon, and to take samples of lunar material including lunar regolith for consumption and experimentation both in space and at home.

Copied from Xyon's claim, adapted and rewritten by me.:)

Come on guys, there are still hundreds of significant objects in the solar system, get them fast!!

Template:

I hereby claim that I claimed ___ as the legal property of Orbiter-Forum, usage of said ___ thereafter to be free to use for all members of aforementioned forum for as long as the ___ remains in orbit around the _________________________. In addition, members of Orbiter-Forum are free to plan trips to the ___, provided __________________________________, and to take samples of _____ material including _____ for consumption and experimentation both in space and at home.

I hereby claim planet earth! As far as I know, no-one has staked a claim on it by lawful means. Take this, Napoleon! All you'd had to do was go to a Notar and claim it. Noone needs armies when your law is screwed enough!

fine then, i claim the rest of space, what you gonna do about it? nothing! we arent gonna pay some crazy spanish woman just to "use" the sun.

anyway, if you want to be all legal about it: define "using the sun". i personally dont use it directly, and neither does anyone on this planet, we only use the radiation that comes from it.

silly woman :p

ah, humans, when will their learn that the sun, as well as pretty much every other star out there belongs to the PROBE! :hailprobe:

this reminds me of that guy who once was selling plots on the moon.... you can't OWN celestial bodies any more than you can own the sky, or the fact that sometimes it rains - there's pretty clear laws on that - trying to sell unownables is for all efects, a scam

as the saying goes, "a fool and his money are soon parted" -- proven true, once again

Hm, so i can't stake a claim at that iridium deposit i found on the Moon?
Or is it only about claiming entire planets?

That article is in direct defiance of the will of the Probe. We shall conquer the Solar system and claim it in the name of rational inquiry and the scientific method. Probe wills it!

But you can't claim Mars, because the Martians already claimed it, obviously.

Oh my. Civil law notaries' services are pretty overpriced here. I assume she's paid a healthy ammount of money to have her claim recorded.

Her case has nowhere to go in court, though. The 1967 treaty on Outer Space clearly defines celestial bodies as "res nullius", yet not subject to appropiation. Besides, a notarial act by itself proves nothing: She must prove as well that she has acquired property through a valid way, such as inheritance, purchase or continued exclusive use.

But, again
