Well from a technical stand point the revolutionary thing is being able to maintain image orientation and processing in "real-time".

The inability to kill the lag between your movement and your avatar's movement/viewpoint (and the associated disorientation/nausea) is what killed most of the early VR units. Trust me, this a problem I've worked on in my meat-space studies and it is way more complicated than you'd initially think. :beathead:

If Carmack has come up with a clever work-around to avoid the "brute force" computing methods the rest of have been forced to use, more power to him. It would also be entirely in character considering that his clever work-arounds to avoid the "brute force" methods of 3D Rendering are what make modern 3D graphics engines possible.

I don't think you get just how "insurmountable" a problem that was supposed to be. Sure, a F-14 Tomcat may be nothing more than an evolved [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sopwith_Camel"]Sopwith Camel[/ame], but calling it "just progress" is sort of selling the thing short.

Regardless of what you think, War Thunder (and to a lesser extent WOWP) is the Poor Man's IL2. Easy to get into, and era in which the game takes place is rather popular.

Somehow I've never seen this thread before. No one has dropped steam dev day talks in here yet, so I will. Loads of talk about VR. This one in particular is pretty neat

As for the facebook thing, only time will tell. I think it won't be as bad as some fear. I mean, I'd rather facebook not be a part of gear I want to purchase, but so it goes. I don't think Oculus is going to be quite as popular as facebook hopes. VR is going to be a hard sell to the masses. I am mostly curious if Valve will keep their involvement with Oculus or find someone else to support.

Also, Sony announced project Morpheus recently which looks pretty awesome, which is for Ps4.

Rift is an overblown piece of glamour hardware as long as TIR is still in the picture and updating at a rapid pace.

Unless you are looking forward to virtual farmville that is.
