That was it. I changed "ORB:SimTime\n" to "ORB:SimTime\r\n" and I started getting information back. I don't want to say how many hours I spent looking at that trying to figure it out.:facepalm:
I've been playing Orbiter for years so I figured I'd finally dive in and start writing some code...

I did try what you suggested, using PuTTYtel to connect. I was able to enter the same command and get a response back:
ORB:SimTime
ORB:SimTime=81.780413
Which tells me that the problem is definitely with my C++ skills. No surprise really. :)...
