After reading your post and looking at the box's resources, I feel it might be a lack of memory. Part of the ram memory is used for the on-board graphics chip set. I have orbiter running very well in wine on another box, using an nvidia graphics card and opensuse 11.3.

Thank you velcroman5! The link provided the info for the fix. I edited the nvidia.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d/ and added the line begining with 'options......', saved the file and rebooted. The virtual video card was then listed in the orbiter control panel under video. I was able to run...
