Um why would it be lost? I am looking at the OFMM wiki and somehow a few objectives got on there specifically
In my mind the best way to observe Martin weather in detail is to have 'weather stations' every 10° - 40° longitude. Also the MSEP could collect seismic activities as well. (not...
True, but AFAIK the stuff we want to use doesn't exist yet and if it did, what would make this project any different than using the Arrow for example? If the project is a modified replica of any other mission a single pilot can fly, where would be the attraction to it? And I doubt it will take...
I have been going over the wiki just now and realized we don't have a full list of things for our MSEP experiments. So far we have the basic:
Central Station -includes radio and whatever
Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG)-power
RTG Cask
I saw 'Establish a grid network of permanent...
Orbit refueling sounds like it might be required even for a while anyway.
To make the fuel for the lander we need
Power
generator
Fuel generator
ISRU
H2 supply
Possibly the presence of humans to setup the gen and ISRU
LOX/CH4 engines have ISP of 322-381 seconds. Assume 351 ISP...
Just curious, do you think multiple landers is a good idea? I would hate to get there and have "we have a problem."
Since these landers will run on methane o2 mix combo, the landers will have to actually land for a while to refuel. But in order for that to happen we would need the insitu fuel...
Ahh I see so like this: (forgive my :censored: job drawing)
red = engines
blue = fuel
orange = aerobraking fin things
Left side is closed position, right is opened.
I think we are going to be needing a much larger tank though
calculated using LOX/LCH4 which has 424 kg/m^3
A 5000 kg dry...
Just saying, reentry with the SkyCrane will be somewhat like the shuttle, very little amount of hovering capabilities. You have to put it right on the LZ pretty darn close. However, only a few of the many will be landing/taking off with the skycrane. Most of the time will be spent launching from...
I am sorry if this seems to be a silly question, but now looking at your vessel here, which way is down? And where would a OSHV size vessel fit in there? I think that little bar thing going out the middle is the impact absorbing foundation, am I right?
I was thinking this lander would be...
I am thinking a large part of the consumables and fuel can be stowed outside of the OSHV.
Excellent
The OSHV should accommodate crew resting bunks, few days of consumables, and area for mission specific tasks.
This is what I'm thinking for this skycrane/lander duo:
I might be a...
On that note, any estimates for what a 8 man lander would weigh and its dimensions?
First off, do you think the skycrane can be designed big enough to land the mars lander, and if not, can we use an inflatable heat shield on a 45+ tonne lander? Using the skycrane, we can reuse a large portion...
MD != Ph.D
Its in the initial calculations right now, but so far I calculate a huge weight budget for our trip here.
A quick sample: 4.8ish km/s from LEO to Mars, and 3.4ish km/s from LMO to Earth.
Round up just because:
5 km/s and 3.5 km/s
Apparently LH2 (which is Nerva fuel) cannot be...
First I want everyone to keep in mind this program doesn't span a one round trip to Mars. This can continue for multiple missions with many more UMMU in the scenarios.
That being said, how many UMMU are we wanting to go on this first landing trip?
Are they going to be NPCs or are we going to...
Solar power is really hard and inefficient in massive quantities at the distance of Mars. It would take a huge area covered in panels just to get the same from a reactor. Also, what would you do at night or when theres a sand storm? ;)
to the base load question, I would guess it would be like a...
I found a reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuttle-Derived_Heavy_Lift_Launch_Vehicle#HLV_specifications
The HLV will constrain any Mars architecture design due to having less payload capability than Ares V and is limited to only a 7.5 meter diameter payload fairing instead of the 10...
possible I suppose, we need a mesh of a rover, or part of it anyway. The short range exploration crew could go pick it up while out on missions I guess.
Excellent job :cheers:
Last I knew we where rooting for the Ares V launcher, but I was still trying to figure out a way to easily change cargo with the way it is designed. This might be a very nice alternative :cheers:
The only question I have is if it is able to have the universal cargo...
It looks like any combination of UMDH other than LOX is hypergolic. I would guess we shouldnt have any toxic materials around the landing area. For two, how much weight do you think the machines that create LOX LH2? I cannt find a reference but when browsing online i see all insitu propellent...
