Hmmh.. I was wondering too. Do we have to take into account, that the energy was released at a high altitude (40-20 kilometers) and along a similar distance (along the trail)? Edit: I am by far no expert, but it looks like there's an area on the trail, where it looks like glowing (plasma?).

The thing pointed out here is the (inferior) lighting model used in Orbiter's inline client. I believe it uses the Lambert model to calculate the illumination for the planetary surfaces. SpaceEngine for example uses the more sophisticated/more realistic Lommel-Seeliger Lighting model. You can...
