Launch News [Sep.1, 2016] Falcon 9 explodes on the Launch Pad

Well now I'm lost, what did you mean by that last line then about it probably being legal?

Launch News [Sep.1, 2016] Falcon 9 explodes on the Launch Pad

You're acting like it's some kind of shady deal. It'd be a pretty standard policy on the surplus lines market if SpaceX decides to insure the flight/vehicle itself. It is possible they simply practice self insurance and decide instead to retain all the potential losses to SpaceX. But I can...

US Airways Jet crashes in Hudson River

I don't disagree that pilots are indeed trained to perform a water landing. From what I remember about the event though, and why it is exceptional, is the degree to which it was almost flawlessly executed. In other words, people SHOULD have died, but thanks to Captain Sullenberger, no one did.

News Raspberry Pi computer, is it rational?

I have plans to use one as an audio relay for SDR purposes. I can put the Pi right at the antenna so there's no feedline losses for the weak UHF signals I'm after. Originally I tried a PI-zero, but it doesn't have the processing power to handle RTL_TCP at a high enough quality so I'll try a PI-3...

News Star Trek 50 years on.

This is one of the best tribute videos I've seen. It was made for the 40th anniversary so it doesn't include the newest movies, but it's still great with a great soundtrack:

    Orbiter 2016

It was set to "allow application to decide" and I turned it to off which did it. Though I'm not sure why nVidia failed to pick up the setting from Orbiter in that case. I'll have to play with it some more. More general question to the floor: I haven't been following the technical details of the...

    General Question Payload Manager

As a matter of fact, I did about 3 years ago for 2010. Orbiter Payload Handler SDK It doesn't seem to have gotten much use, but I am certainly interested in any feedback.

    Orbiter 2016

I'm noticing the same behavior with D3D9. [UPDATE]: I played around with the graphics settings just to make sure 60fps just didn't happen to be what my hardware could produce and 60fps is all I can get.

    Orbiter 2016

Excellent! Thank you so much Dr. Schweiger! I will be torrenting and seeding all the packages too.

Question C# Pass object by reference - uninitialized

 That's what I get for late-night coding sessions. I enjoy them, but man do they have some downsides. Yea, the issue seems to be the typo of still newing it, which I didn't catch because my object is named similarly to my class. Thanks Blake and Face for saving me, and thanks everyone...

Question C# Pass object by reference - uninitialized

Ok, so it sounds like my code should work then. So why is it still showing as null when I call the later method? The object isn't destroyed at any point after construction.

Question C# Pass object by reference - uninitialized

I'm working on a C# program outside of Orbiter, and I've hit a little snag. I need to pass a dictionary from one class (a windows form) into another (call it a child form, though there's no polymorphic relationship) with the result being that I'm able to edit the original dictionary. In C++ this...

Sun Entering New Phase of its Life?

What's interesting is we really don't know all that much about the life of a star when you think about it. How long have we been observing ours scientifically in earnest? Maybe 150 years? That's roughly equivalent to studying a human for 118 seconds out of a 100 year life. Even studying...

News Retired NASA astronaut charged with murder in DUI crash that killed 2 young sisters

IT's very likely the charges are vehicular homicide as dman posted, and the news just heard "homicide" and went with murder since that's typically what you imagine in connection with the word "homicide." In the reverse, here in Georgia, we don't have any charge named "attempted murder," it's...

    Gaming Cities: Skylines

My main problem with CS is the non-renewable services (dump, cemeteries) get too full too fast.

General Question Cool things to do in Orbiter?

Station building is (or sadly, was [haven't been in Orbiter seriously for going on two years now]) my favorite thing to do. I built one, then got obsessed with writing my own launcher, and truss system, and then real life took over.

News Chernobyl disaster: Ukraine marks 30th anniversary

Three Mile Island didn't have quite the same radiation threat in the general plant as Chernobyl or Fukushima did. Think about it, we have to specially harden anything going to space and while we don't send Astronauts up unshielded, they aren't exactly encased in lead vehicles either. The...

    Max gimbal angle for engines?

So doing some quick vector math, when the engine is gimbaled to its maximum rotation, assuming a 3.3MN engine (a bit more powerful than the RS-68A), it would effectively exert a force of 344kN in the direction of rotation (well, technically opposite where the bell "points")?

    Max gimbal angle for engines?

I'm somewhat getting back to working my Prometheus (again) and was wondering if anyone knew what the maximum gimbal angle of engines like the RS-68 is? I found the maximum angle of the SSME to be +/- 10.5 degrees, but I didn't know if it was any different for more conventional launch vehicles...

    Autonomous vehicles OK'ed in California.

I sincerely hope the cars either have no wireless communications, or there's an air gap between those and any safety-critical systems.
