They seem to be supporting lighting protection cables over the pad. They also had lights, so they doubled as light towers.
BTW: the exhaust needs to be be longer, it was about twice the rocket length.
Some of the "particles and fields" instruments are still working and are collecting data on the interstellar environment, so that data comes down every day. The Voyagers are the only (human-made) (working) machines out there, so that data is still new to us.
