    Digitized NASA data tapes

Got 5 tapes that contain Ariel 3 telemetry, recorded at Winkfield. Finally acquired some 7-track IRIG tape recorder heads, from an Ampex FR-600 no less! two 4-track 1/2 inch heads setup for interlaced 7-track. The 7-track IRIG standard allows for a single 7-track head, or two heads for...

    Digitized NASA data tapes

Gerald from the unmannedspaceflight forum has the following idea: When coding the upper potential with 1, and the lower potential with 0, with a more or less fixed clock rate, we get pairs 01 or 10, never 00 or 11. So such a pair, or transition, seems to code a bit . So it should be fairly...

    Digitized NASA data tapes

Some interesting new finds, did we play telemetry? Last week I took the time to play some ESA tapes (1/2 inch 7-track) on my Akai X201D (1/4 inch 4-track) The tapes played: 1. SAT: ESRO 1A TAPE ID: 680841-292-230 ESOC/Section TLM: 13496 DATE: 24 JULY 70 2. SAT: 720,141 TAPE ID: 1135 05...

    Digitized NASA data tapes

Once I get the recorder I will make some test recordings and visualize the tracks so we can determine how many mm we need to move the head. I'll take precise measurements to keep track of the adjustments. The head without the shield is the erase head, properly don't want to switch those...

Hmm, good call on the heads, I took a second look at the Otari MX5050 MKIII-8 headstack, and the rec and repro head seem to have skirts around them. See here: https://reverb.com/item/10099682-otari-mx-5050-mkiii-8-1-2-8-track-reel-to-reel-tape-heads-headstack-head-block It looks like the...

    Digitized NASA data tapes

Lots of great information, thanks notebook and L. I think L misunderstood, the developing is not to digitize the contents. But to verify if there is anything on it at all, how strong the tracks are, and what kind of signals we can expect from each track. Unless we are able to find a 7-track...

    Digitized NASA data tapes

Most video tape formats used FM for the audio, like VHS. Most of the NASA satellite tapes have the telemetry channel designated as 'Direct' but I think one or two documents also have a one of the two telemetry channels as 'FM'

    Digitized NASA data tapes

Awesome Notebook, thanks for contacting him. If I were to digitize each track, would it be possible to demodulate the FM track with a computer program? From what I understand, in order to demodulate an FM track you need a reference track. back in the day this was done with an analog circuit...

    Digitized NASA data tapes

Thank you notebook. I would be interested if it is possible to calculate the signal frequency on the track by using the scans of the (Home made by the way.) magnetic viewing solution. I do have higher resolution scans.

    Digitized NASA data tapes

Update #4 I've got good, and great news. First the good news, I assembled a small setup to be able to play more of the tapes on my 1/4 inch 4-track recorder. I played the tapes that I previously was afraid had no signals at all, and after some time (8-10 minutes) they too give the expected...

Update # sat telemetry tapes. Hello dear readers, First off, welcome this thread to 2019! we have made so much progress. I hope everyone is doing well. Unfortunately due to the USA gov shutdown no progress has been made on receiving a NASA document we hope will contain the info we need to...

    Digitized NASA data tapes

Update Greetings, It has been a while since I last posted here. A lot of progress has been made. For starters, there are 12 files on the tape, of which we have confirmed 6 to be image files, and have decoded them. There are 3 B/W images and 3 duo-colour images. (file1, 2, 6, 7, 11, 12) Here...

Disclaimer: We are not funded and/or endorsed by NASA. Greetings, What have we done: For the last few months I and my team have been working hard to acquire and digitize NASA computer tapes from the 60's to 70's. By now we have been able to pick the fruits of our labor as we have digitized...

Question Restoring original Apollo tapes from Bochum tracking station

Hello Orbiter Forum members, After I have done some digging, and with some suggestions from other people, I have found a german radio station that at the time of Apollo received and recorded audio, biomedical telementry and video from the moon. The Bochum tracking station. Someone who came...

Discussion Apollo 16 footage played on Ampex VR-2000B

Answers to questions 1 I think it is a TV montage from NASA, given there is a NASA logo in the beginning. It is not an original live tape. The launch seems to be from Apollo 15 though, weird. But the rest of the scenes look to be from Apollo 16. Zdenek owns the reel. He digitized and...
