    Long time no see!

I actually logged back in to poke around, which I've done a few times in the past, but I saw your recent post and was inspired to do one of my own. Good to see you!

    Long time no see!

Hi all, some of you might remember me from ages ago but I decided to pop back in and actually post. I was active here circa 2010 when I was in middle school, but I slowly fell away from Orbiter when I got to high school and beyond. This forum and community had a surprisingly large impact on my...

Orbiter gets a little mention in xkcd

When you mouse over the comic, it says "Ahem. We are STRICTLY an Orbiter shop."

Orbiter gets a little mention in xkcd

An extremely popular webcomic at that! Any old webcomic could mention Orbiter and it wouldn't be a big deal, but xkcd on the other hand...

Orbiter gets a little mention in xkcd

Take a look at the mouseover text on today's xkcd. I thought that was a nice little reference to the sim!

discussion: are there any places that complex numbers are necessary?

Well of course, that's why we all love using complex numbers  I'm not arguing that we SHOULD be thinking of it so, only that it could be thought of like that.

discussion: are there any places that complex numbers are necessary?

But can't you just think of the complex number and any operation done to it as the scaling and rotation of a vector?

discussion: are there any places that complex numbers are necessary?

Hm, if this is the question I think the answer is that no, no such part of physics exists. Here is my reasoning, which may very well be wrong. Of course i has no physical meaning, since the square root of -1 has no physical meaning. It is then prudent to ask what we mean by "multiplication". We...

[Video] Richard Feynman on Quantum Mechanics Lectures

I have to say, almost everything Feynman related is worth a read. I consider Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! to be one of my favorite books. I also recently picked up the Feynman Lectures on Physics, so needless to say, I will be occupied for a while!

Poll How many languages do you speak?

As already stated here, I don't think this is correct. Different dialects are not the same as different languages, so people are fine calling what is spoken in the United States 'English'. No need to specify

Poll How many languages do you speak?

Terrific point. This is something I have encountered before when discussing conlangs. Something that gives language power as well as meaning is the culture from which it comes. It has been said that one of the only ways to truly learn a language is to immerse yourself in it. This is not only...

Poll How many languages do you speak?

Interesting! If you don't mind me asking, what made you chose German and English as the other languages you would study? I only ask because Italian is a Romance language while German and English are both Germanic.

Poll How many languages do you speak?

Valid point, although I was thinking mainly in terms of a second language (aside from English). Your statement is definitely correct though. Although, I would still argue that French is more useful in Belgium, France, Switzerland, Luxembourg. Overall, you are right.

Poll How many languages do you speak?

Esperanto is a language the was constructed in the early 20th century, with the goal of making a 'universal' second language for all people. It was made to be extremely easy to learn, only requiring about 500 hours of study to attain fluency. In comparison with other languages that require...

Poll How many languages do you speak?

I've recently become very interested in language and linguistics, so I thought I would make a thread here to discuss it. I only fluently speak English, although I am getting there with my Spanish (not quite conversationally fluent though, at least orally). I am also working on my French, but I...
