Although I've had Orbiter on my computer for months, I'm still very much a newbie.

I am getting the hang of it though. I remember when I first found it (on the coverdisc of one of the UK's PC magazines), it was far too complex for me, but then after watching one of the (real) shuttle launches a year or so ago, I decided to give it a more in-depth look.

I am at the stage now where I can take the (superb) DGIV into orbit, rendezvous and dock with the ISS and return to KSC - although I'm still not quite sure how to time the de-orbit burn precisely...

I also am able to launch the Space Shuttle (V3.9.4) into orbit, rendezvous and dock with the ISS (albeit probably not following the correct procedures... ;) ), deorbit and land at KSC.

Both of these things are done with extensive help from the autopilots, of course...

I can also launch the DGIV, fly to the moon and land at Brighton Beach, and have recently learned how to get back to Earth.

The only problem I am having at the moment is trying to get the payload bay doors closed on the space shuttle. I press the [K] button, but all I get is a *clunk*. There's clearly something I'm forgetting to do, but I can't find what that is!!!

If using the Stock Shuttle, then;

Bay door opening sequence:
· Set the PL BAY DOOR switch to STOP.
· Set the PL BAY DOOR SYS 1 and SYS 2 switches to ENABLE.
· Set the PL BAY DOOR switch to OPEN.
· Wait until the OP/CL status of the talkback indicator shows OP.
· Set the PL BAY DOOR switch to STOP.
· Set PL BAY DOOR SYS 1 and SYS 2 switches to DISABLE.
Bay door closing sequence:
· Make sure that the radiators, Ku-band antenna and RMS arm are stowed.
· Set the PL BAY DOOR switch to STOP.
· Set the PL BAY DOOR SYS 1 and SYS 2 switches to ENABLE.
· Set the PL BAY DOOR switch to CLOSE.
· Wait until the OP/CL status of the talkback indicator shows CL.
· Set the PL BAY DOOR switch to STOP.
· Set PL BAY DOOR SYS 1 and SYS 2 switches to DISABLE.

Same here...I re-enter with the dorrs open..lol

I did that once

If using Shuttle Fleet: Read the manuals. Hit Ctrl+X to stow the arm first(not a fast process) if it isn't already stowed. Hit Ctrl+U to stow the Ku-band antenna. Then try to close the doors.
My latest flight was a reentry from the ISS down to runway 33 with a Shuttle Fleet shuttle. I made the landing although I did have the alarm go off as I was approaching Florida.(dead :p)(also, I never closed the doors until about halfway through my reentry! lol) I think I might have landed just short of the actual runway.(landed on the arrows maybe... and I'm not so sure if it was very softly)

I had stowed the arm and the antenna, and was STILL getting the clunk. I have also read the manuals thoroughly.

I did randomly press various keys one time and eventually the doors closed, but I've no idea which key combination actually worked!

I'd say my biggest accomplishment was a KSC - Olympus base flight with the stock DG.

Before I had learned of the existence of addons such as TransX and IMFD. Using only Orbiter's stock MFD's (mostly orbit MFD and transfer MFD). Most of it war trial-and-error work to get a good launch date and heading from KSC.

Although it should be obvious to see, make sure that your radiators aren't deployed either.(can't remember the key combination, but it's in the manual) If you have that stowed I have absolutely no clue what is wrong.:weird:

Built the first realistic mars mission for Orbiter.

Built the first futuristic Base system for our Solar System for Orbiter.

I have been trying to get the Blue Mars and green Mars add-ons for ages..I know they won't be compatible with build 2006 of Orbiter, but I would still like to have those bases...Do you have them somewhere?

I sure do. I did manage to update them half way for the 2005 edition then stopped. The files all together incl the planetary textures is about 290 meg. The bases alone is about 20 meg.

But... Having someone code the Mars ship would be wonderful:)
