An Air Algérie MD-83 with 116 on board seems to have gone missing over Mali. Hopefully this isn't another total loss of aircraft.

Air Algérie lost contact with Flight 5017 after takeoff from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, as the jetliner headed to Algiers with 116 people on board, Algeria's state news agency and the plane's operator said Thursday.

Contact with the Boeing Co. BA -2.34% MD-83, carrying 110 passengers and six crew members, was lost at about 1:55 a.m. local time, 50 minutes after the jet had taken off, the Algerian government's official news agency said in a statement. "Air Algérie launched [an] emergency plan," the agency added. It gave no other details.

Looks like it was brought down by a Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Those types of systems are noted for their extreme turbulence and the flight was asking for a change of flight plan to avoid one before they went missing. The Air France flight in 2009 went down for the exact same reason.

All da time here in the Philippines, there is an ITCZ between Visayas and Mindanao, and many planes were flying above that ITCZ and none crashed.

If we are getting into numerology, we can likely claim that any act that is described by numbers or makes use by numbers can be a sign of bad luck... including numerology.

(I thus avoided using digits here. I promise to keep as much math as possible purely symbolic...)
