The first manned Launch of Ares 1/Orion is ready to go. The mission is to dock to the SSF and perform the exchange of the primary crew of FE5 with the primary crew of FE6. After the exchange the Orion will undock and return to Earth. Mission duration will be about 5 days. Mission summary is as follows.

Mission Backround:
Eight member Freedom Expedition (FE) crews are devided into two groups. Four members make up the Primary Crew and four make up the Secondary crew. The primary crew is made up of the Commander, Executive Officer, the crew Flight Engineer, and the Medical Officer. The secondary crew is made up of one or two Mission Specialists and two Orbital Manuvering Vehicle Engineers. Crew routation is done with Orions and HL-20s. For Orion exchanges only half the FE crew can launch at a time. The primary crew launches first with the secondary crew launching at least a week and up to three weeks after the primary crew. When launching on a HL-20 all crew members launch at one time.
UPDATE:
The Orion Capsule Challenger is on her way to the SSF. Docking will be on Feb 3.
UPDATE Feb 3 FD 3:
Challenger has docked to the SSF. Crews will be exchanging tomorrow with undocking of Challenger on FD5 carrying the primary crew of FE 5. One of the meny first for this mission is the first docking of an Orion to the SSF.
UPDATE Feb 5 FD 5:
Challenger and the prime crew of FE 5 are ready to leave the SSF and come home. Undocking and flyaround will commence shortly.
UPDATE:
Challenger is on her own. Deorbit and entry will occur tomorrow, FD6.
UPDATE Feb 6 FD 6:
Challenger and crew are ready for deorbit. Slashdown will be around 8:30 EST in the Atlantic Orion Recovery Zone.

Challenger has been recovered and the crew is in good shape.
Next launch from KSC will be the Secondary crew of FE6 on Ares 1 from Pad 39C. The Orion capsule for this flight will be OC-102 Columbia, on her first mission to the SSF. Launch is set for Feb 15.
