Bit parochial I'm afraid, but if you are in the UK tonight, BBC is showing a couple of progs you may like:

The Search for Life: The Drake Equation
For many years our place in the universe was the subject of theologians and philosophers, not scientists, but in 1960 one man changed all that.

Beautiful Equations
Artist and writer Matt Collings takes the plunge into an alien world of equations. He asks top scientists to help him understand five of the most famous equations in science, talks to Stephen Hawking about his equation for black holes and comes face to face with a particle of anti-matter.

Should be fun!

With an equation that we don't know the values of, let alone the answer to?

Sounds like fun... especially the antimatter part, for what it's worth.

Right behind you - don't look!
Coming face to face with a particle of antimatter sounds like something Captain Jack Harkness should do. He can survive far worse encounters.

EDIT: he would probably shag it.

Since when were some of the most fundamental human constructs 'alien?'

BBC Speak.

They have had a fear of science programs ever since they dropped Tommorow's World:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomorrow's_World

So every science show has to have a "cute" description to fool the viewer. Its not too bad since they got BBC 4, they have no shame about science.

Saying all that, I missed both progs, and will have to catch up on-line! I'll give a quick repris later.

Having watched it, I think they meant it was an alien construct to the presenter who was a self described artist with no knowledge or appreciation of maths or science. Hence equations are alien to him and the program was him exploring how maths can be as beautiful as art.

Could have been described a bit better though.
