Im always on the look out for awesome documentaries, realistic scfi etc. Well, A few weeks ago on youtube I stumbled upon this show from BBC.

I would like to hear everyones opinion on it and what you think. If you have not seen it, I would invite you to do so for the purpose of discussion. I dont get to geek out about space to much with the people around me as its not something that really interests them so this time im taking it here.

Anyways, please discuss. :)

Very nice film, although make sure you watched the BBC version, and not the US version. Bit of a different ending after the medic dies. :(

I quite like it. But, some things that bug me about it:

1. The landers go into bays on the ship, rather than just docking. Who knows what they're exposing the people inside to? (I might juat be missing something though)

2. Landing on Io, but not Europa? From the get-go, Europa should have been the target.

3. Nothing about Titan, but they didn't know very much about it at the time, so...

4. The Venus landing seemed very, very far-fetched to me, but I could be wrong as to its actual feasibility.

Sweet,

This is exactly what I was hoping for in this thread. What do you think about the magnetic drive they employed for Jupiter and the sun to block the brunt of all the radiation they were exposed to? This docu-drama has been the best I have seen thus far.

I am not aware that the british version is different in any way. I will start the quest for finding it and watch it as well!

As for the craft they used, to me, it seemed very plausible. I also like that (from my understanding) they reused the lander(s) from planet to planet. I guess I should not take it so literally, but biological aspect.... No protection measures?

I still cant get my mind all of the gravity field generator. I mean, I cant even begin to think of how much power you would need to create one that would protect you let alone having one on your spacesuit protecting your head while walking around.

I also though when they got to saturn, it doesnt seem like a good idea (to me) to go play with all the rocks. Its kinda like me handing you a ball and telling you to go play in traffic.

I very much enjoyed it, and have strongly considered watching it again, but I have to admit it's badly flawed in places. I mean, these people landed on Venus for Probe's sake, but they were scared of Europa? And don't get me started on that magnetic sun-shield thing. With the power required to run that sucker, they could have done a mission to Sirius.

To be fair, it was well-casted and well-acted, and the special effects and planetary vistas were spectacular. But in the end, it strikes me as a nice little piece of science fiction.

If I could, I'd replace the Venus landing with a flyby/gravity assist to get to Mars, replace the Io landing with a Europa landing, and tone down the seemingly gratuitous "suspense" scenes, like the dust devil on Mars.

Great show but this thread should be in the Brighton Lounge.

They couldn't take off from Venus like it was shown.

I was afraid to give that as a specific reason for leaving out the Venus landing, but since someone who knows what they're talking about said it:

I agree.

Looks like German television showed the British version .
It was such a great feeling to see our Earth at the end.

I always keep in the back of my head that this is not how it really will be for the brave/lucky few who will eventually do this. It is nice that stuff like this really brings out my imagination. Orbiter does the same thing. At night I click on the ISS's webcam and I have it set up to where I can watch it as I fall asleep. For some reason for me it really calms me no matter how worried or anger or excited I am. There is something with space that kinda dulls things out and puts me back on an even keel. If im really upset, I break out my telescope and stare at some stars.

While we are on the subject of this... Anyone care to share their faovrite documentaries, shows or whatever? Like I said earlier, I am always looking for stuff to watch. :)

Yes, the space is very strange. Is so beautiful and peaceful, but is so violent. Extreme temperatures, extreme pressure, fast winds, radiation fields, but when we see it, it's just beatiful! Some days ago I was watching the sky with my telescope and I saw Jupiter and its moons by the first time! It was stunning. Me and Jupiter, so close but so far... This giant planet was a tiny ball, and the moons just tiny stars.
This documentary shows some amazing things that could happen to the crew of an interplanetary mission, the dangers of space, but how beatiuful it can be. The animations are stunning! The best documentary ever created about the space!

I see it a few years ago and liked it (see my avatar picture). If you know, try a TV series called "Defying Gravity" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1319690/

There are some things in Orbiter:

i´ve seen the movie recently and i think that there are better places to visit, and more realistic.

i would do:

Mercury instead of venus,
Mars
Sun flyby
Jupiter> Europe
Saturn> Titan
Pluto
Comet

it´s a good mission to do in orbiter, but need a good planning

I don't think we are that far away from producing such shields. There are experiments taking place which simulate Earth's magnetic field using liquid sodium and from what I can gather, it doesn't take too much power to generate a field but it is highly dangerous because of the liquid state of sodium.

I found the following links, which makes some interesting reading :)
http://physics.aps.org/story/v19/st3
http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/engineering/4277476

Both of theses experiments are small scale, but engineering them to spaceship capacity wouldn't be that difficult I imagine.

Thank you thumper235 for signposting this documentary - I'll definitely be watching it tonight when I get home :tiphat:
