Question DGIV N2 Tanks

I was wondering what the purpose is for the N2 tanks on the DGIV. I've been using the craft for quite some time and have yet to actually see the level of the tanks drop.

Are the tanks actually used for anything? Why are they even being monitored if they don't change?

I happen to have just read that section in the manual:

"The N2 tanks replace air lost when you operate the airlock and repressurize the cabin when you set a higher pressure. They are much smaller than the O2 tanks."

N2 isn't consumed, and isn't needed unless the pressure changes.

I have seen them drop by 1%. But I dont think any lower. N2 is used in real life to neutralize the atmosphere, not sure if that is the right word. N2 is used to mix with the O2 to prevent an Apollo 1 situation.
