13 March 2009
In order to carry out additional checks on the ground segment of the Herschel and Planck programmes, Arianespace and ESA have jointly agreed to postpone the launch initially planned for next April 16. A new launch date will be announced at the end of March.

ARIANESPACE FLIGHT - HERSCHEL and PLANCK
The launch readiness review (RAL) took place in Kourou on Tuesday, May 12, 2008 and authorized count-down operations for the HERSCHEL & PLANCK launch.
For its second launch of the year, Arianespace will orbit two scientific satellites for the European Space Agency: the Herschel space telescope and the Planck scientific observatory.

The two satellites are being launched towards the Lagrange Point (L2), once again demonstrating the operational capabilities of Ariane 5. This is the only launch vehicle on the commercial market today capable of launching two payloads simultaneously, and handling a complete array of missions, from commercial launches into geostationary orbit, to scientific missions into special orbits.
It will be launched from the Ariane launch complex N° 3 (ELA3), in Kourou, French Guiana.
The Ariane 5 ECA launcher lift-off for this flight is scheduled during the day of May 14, 2009 as soon as possible within the following launch window:

What should I watch:

STS-125 EVA-1, for the historic replacement of WFPC2

or

Herschel & Planck launch?

If the EVA goes wrong there will be reruns and reruns

If the launch goes wrong there will be a big boom! :p

Question:

Why aren't any of Europe's spacecraft ever given British names?

Instead of Herschel & Planck, we could have Tom & Bob, or James & Chris, or Steve & Dan, or Matt & Rick????:p

Hmm. They just don't have the same ring to them that French or German names do;)

Maybe it's also something to do with the fact that Britain contributes the least amount of money to the ESA than any other of the major European countries!

XMM-Newton...

Herschel was BTW british citizen, despite being born in the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg, in the town of Hanover.

Nice launch, wonder why the camera crew have trouble tracking the rocket! Too much vino?; or they don't know which direction its going...

For Orbinaut Pete.
If you aren't aware(and you may well be!), UK had a founding in ESA through ELDO:-

Looks like they are still findings bits:-

Anyway, good for Arianne, and looking forward to the trek to L2.

It is great to see that Europe also is taking significant steps to explore the space.

I wish we would also do manned space flight finally. But I'm confident that this might happen as well sooner or later.
