Has anyone had any experience with hostmonster?

I see it is recommended top of the list at top10webhosting.com

but I see mixed reviews here;

webhostinggeeks.com/hostmonster_review

Are those cases old/dumb clients?

Or does any one have any other suggestions for 'pay for' web hosting services?

I would prefer;

  • Unlimited bandwidth (requirement)
  • FTP access (requirement)
  • SSL (flex)
  • some SQL server, prefer MySql (with PHP) (requirement)
  • Flexible with HD space
  • Multiple domains would be cool but not required

Anyone have any caution/warnings and things to look out for with web hosting companies?

I've been using SiteGround for years with great success, so I would easily recommend their services. I'm currently hosting my business site and another forum on one of their shared servers.

I've been using hostmonster the last year to actually without any problems from the hosting and a more or less fast support. Anyway... this kind of services on a shared server have the problem that if you overload the server too much... probably you'll get a lot of "HTTP Error 500 Internal server error" errors. You can upgrade the hostmonster service with a standalone server.

Until now they seem a confident service. (I don't know other cases obiously)
