That (in)famous airport could be a nice addition to Orbiter, now that we have terrain elevation. The runway is awfully short (527m or 1,729ft) and even worse built on a mountain side (it has a slope !) but this would precisely be the perfect place to have fun with that new terrain feature. And to practice hover-assisted takeoff/landing ;)

Needless to say Mount Everest is not far away (actually most Everest climbers begin their trek to Base Camp from Lukla), so that would be the perfect starting point to try insane things like landing a DG on hovers on the top of the world

Here's the Wiki article : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenzing%E2%80%93Hillary_Airport

By the way, its do or die there : if you miss the runway, the mountain side stops you for good. No way to turn around.

Wellllll...

There's an Aerion SBJ model available for X-Plane, whose STOL capabilites at light loads I may or may not have tested in... erm... unorthodox ways.

I used to land and takeoff from there a lot of times when I was using FSX, it is a cool airport.

You can take of from there, using the scenario editor to move the DG to the top of the runway of course.

Feel free to use this and turn it into a proper add-on.
The village seems small so every house can be placed as a base scenario block, for example.

The approach into Lukla definitely is something - I used to have lots of fun with that one. The standard plane to get into there seems to be a Twin Otter, but in the event I have used a B-1900D (which is also a turbo-prop capable of short takeoff/landing).

Its pretty scary to see the mountain wall rush in and to wonder whether you'll make it or not.

I think the most wacko thing I've ever tried there is to get an English Electric Lighting in and out - this basically works by deploying the brake parachute some 50 m to touchdown - I had 10 meters to spare at the end of the runway. Well - and with full afterburners, the Lightning makes back into the air just fine.

Works very nicely thanks !! That slope is severe, but as always the enormous raw engine power of the DG makes it

And the engines auto-gimbal feature really helps there ;)

I spent a few seconds searching for a switch on the lower VC... And I went straight into the opposite mountain

Ok so Mount Everest is right in front of you, you can't miss it. Sorry for light tumbling on landing.

Actually, if you're into mountain scenery, Everest really isn't that impressive - K2 looks much more the towering giant - Skardu (OPSD) is the nearest airport.

A little ball on Everest. Starting with a good impulse ( but only one ! ) will you success to rejoin the valley. :)

Is there a way to set the altitude of markers ? Because currently, they mark the summits at datum level (like in Orbiter 2010), which isn't very convenient for navigation purposes.
