Btw., a nice procedure to start back to moon-orbit.
-I was a bit confused wich direction I have to steer right after take-off of the ascend-module(because pilot's view is straight-up)
-so I launched with "just enough thrust" to start the ascend
-right after lift-off I used launch-MFD's autopilot to have point me to the correct heading
-then I switched the AP off and have done the rest via align-MFD and manual steering

After arriving at the target-vessel, I have had plenty of fuel left.
This procedure worked like a charm for me...

I successfuly landed on Apollo 11 landing site with MAV in LUNAR mode (just added LUNAR in the scenario, not sure if it's the good way...) with... 65 kg fuel remaining!

I used the old(2016 compiled) dll, and had about 1.5 mT left.
Maybe the new dll tries to be "too precise" ? So you might have wasted plenty of fuel just for RCS-corrections ?

What I mean:
Use the i.e. default Atlantis to dock to ISS using PuruitMFD
-old version=fairly good approach (the Atlantis should have been allready rougly alligned with the docking port, to avoid fuel-wasting RCS-bursts)
-new version=perfect aproach, but uses RCS all the time(ultra precise), so sometimes you could run out of fuel, just because of the docking AP.

I appreciate you have fun with the MAV! :)

Adding the 'LUNAR' keyword to lunar scenarios is definitely a good idea!
It reduces the fuel in the ascent stage to 2 ton. Only with the reduced payload the MDV lander has enough dV for a purely propulsive breaking, that is without an atmospheric slowdown.

For launching manually: The simply way is to pitch forward after launch. The ascent stage is oriented that when pitching forward the heading is the same as the descent stage had at touchdown. Then activate the align-orbit MFD and gradually align with the orbital target.

Watchout: When launching into a retrograde orbit (which all exploration missions have after capture), the MFD gives eratic and quickly changing readings, as the vessel is initially moving in the wrong direction following the Moons rotation. This settles down when the vessel has gained some horizontal speed in the direction of the targets orbit.

By "new DLLs" I mean the last you just posted (not the initial zipped Pursuit file). As far as I can see they are both pretty well shaped and could be included as they are in next releases.

Regarding take-off from the moon: same for me, after Crtl-J I start the main engine and immediatly engage the AP from LaunchMFD, 4 mn before the main vessel (Orion) is over lanching base. When the apoaxis is 45 to 50 km, I cut-off the engine and the AP, and circularize 50 s before apoaxis. Aligning and Rendezvous are just a piece of cake.

I was messing around with the MAV and the new SLS 2016, and ran into this issue :) :



The MAV HIAD does not fit inside the fairing/diameter of the SLS B1 booster. Now, the SLS block II fairing may have more tolerance for this size, but it will still be a little too large. Boeing supports the MAV as an SLS to Mars concept, but one of the following is happening:

1) FrancisDrake's MAV size is incorrect
2) SLS size is incorrect
3) Both MAV and SLS specs. are wrong
4) Boeing has it all wrong :)

By the way, I love your MAV lander. Can't say that I've ever landed it successfully, but that is just from my poor piloting skill. However, just curious where you got the specs for the size of the HIAD.

If you ask me, I assume the size of the SLS fairing is correct, while the MAV is not.

How I scaled the MAV (don't laugh) ;)
I found a Boeing presentation (Raftery_5-14-14.pdf) which contains a section view of the MAV ascent stage in reference to a human figure. No dimensions are given. I assumed the human with 1.85 m and scaled the ascent stage accordingly.

Then, from other pictures, I tried to scale the descent stage to fit to the ascent stage.
Then the deployed HIAD to the descent stage. At last I collapsed the 3D-model of the HIAD, guessing, hmm, how tight can you pack it?

This sequence of guessings probably resulted in a too bloated collapsed HIAD.
If someone can point me to better documentation, I can modify the HIAD accordingly.
Or provide me with a target figure to fit inside the payload fairing, then I can try to match it.

Regarding the landings: If you just slowly reduce the thrust after HIAD jettison and keep the vessel upright (slightly leaned back to reduce forward speed) it will eventually touch down, skid over the surface and finally come to a rest.

Or use a landing MFD, e.g "baseland" which does a good job!

I thought I got the MAv to fit the SLS. I can make some larger fairing for the sls if you wanted.

Well, I was using the SLS 2016 version by Longjap (derived from your meshes), found here:

If you are interested in making it, I figure it would be a lot like the SLS Block II fairing. The BII fairing starts at EUS diameter, and moves outward to its widest diameter. Basically, the fairing would be pretty ugly if the MAV started at the bottom of the EUS, and it would more realistic to have some sort of spacer or smaller diameter booster that would allow the MAV to fit in the fairing higher up. According to Boeing's size, this is what it looks like with the SEP tug:



It may also be that the HIAD diameter should be a little skinnier, but if you would like to make the larger fairing, that would also be most welcome. :)

I also found that, when I changed the mesh for the dummy weight in the configuration file to the mesh for the MDV (MDVstowed), it was just the mesh, and when I tried deploying the vessel, Orbiter froze. Still could not find out where I was to put the other configuration files and such. Just got to play around with it a little more when I have time.

Ah! I think the module I had was not MAV/MAV. I had stage. That could solve the problem.

Regarding the SLS, I was using Longjap's SLS meshes he made earlier this year. Do you have a newer addon since your last SLS Skylab II project?

The texture of the HIAD is "fabric_u.dds". It is in the MAV-05.zip, Textures folder.
Maybe have a look, if it was accidently deleted in the Orbiter\Textures folder.
