Back in the (good old) UnrealTournament days, we had a game style called Jailbreak. Players were split into two teams and the point of the game was to imprison the other team by killing them. The enemy would then spawn inside of a jail cell.
There were two ways out of the jail: Any remaining free team members could push a button to open the jail, or if the game was in a stalemate for a while, the jails were opened by an automatic timer.
The maps were similar in layout to capture the flag, just that in place of the flag, there would be the button to free the team mates. Jails were usually at the middle of the map.
To my knowledge, nobody has done such a game style for Minecraft servers. I've seen plenty of competitive maps like Vech's race for wool where two teams race to (yes, you guessed it) get the wool. There are also plenty of adventure style maps, where people cooperate to achieve a certain goal. There is a Jailbreak map, but it's an adventure type map.
This would be a strictly player vs player (team vs team) type of map. The rules are simple:
1.) After players spawn, they walk into their respective jails. Inside of the jail, they'd find some basic weapons and a "Our team is ready" button. Once both teams press the button, the jail gates open and the teams are released.
2.) Players are not allowed to destroy the jail (which unfortunately cannot be built player proof, just very player resistant), bridge gaps to allow imprisoned players to escape or jam doors powered by pistons.
3.) After dying, players must immediately run into the team's jail cell and are forbidden from entering the other team's jail cell.
4.) Players are allowed to kill, harass and annoy the other team, with techniques including jail gate camping, release button camping or traps of any kind, as long as they do not destroy the other team's ability to free their team mates.
5.) Players are allowed to play Minecraft as they would, with the goal of imprisoning the other team, as long as they do not break the rules stated above.
6.) Since no mechanism exists that would count the jailed players without external mods, the losing team must report their loss the moment the entire team is jailed and are forbidden from exiting the jail in case the automatic timer opens the gate.
7.) Teams can agree to additional rules, as long as those rules do not conflict with the above, with the exception of tactics used to imprison the enemy team.
8.) The first team that imprisons the entire enemy team, wins. In case of uncertainty or draw (last two players killing each other simultaneously with arrows, falling in lava, etc...), both teams wait for the automatic timer to open the jail gates and the game is resumed.
I've already figured out the circuitry required to open the jail gates and a jail design that is most player resistant (no jail is player proof, because the only non breakable block is bedrock and it cannot be moved by pistons). The gates would be opened once every 5 to 10 minutes (depending on the size of the map and map design) and the doors would stay open for 5 to 10 seconds. The jail would be built from bedrock and would contain no windows. Inside of the jail would be basic weapons and tools (no windows, to prevent people from shooting arrows in or out). The easiest way to ensure people don't break the gates would be to have no gates. Instead, jumping out of the jail would result in taking a lava bath. The the jail release is activated, sticky pistons would push blocks in to create a bridge over the lava and then retract again after 10 seconds. If players destroy those blocks, they doom themselves and their team.
So, would there be any interest in such a game within the OF community? I'm over with this series of exams in a week, so I will have some time to design a map, if there is interest.
Comments, suggestions, improvement and criticism are welcome.
