For me some re-texturing would do for the exterior models. Something like this is good enough for me:
What I find critical is a VC mesh + textures. There are 2 different Buran cockpits, one for the OK-GLI aerotester and another for the Orbital vehicles. The shuttle cockpit will not work, because the layout is different.
Give me simple but accurate VC meshes (and time ;-) ) and I'll texture them with the right panels ! Preferably in Sketchup format!
I've got as far as this with a shuttle mesh... but the central console is of course missing. This is the orbital version.
