ROME: After more than 500 years earth-bound, the Pontifical Swiss Guard is about to spread its wings and fly. The rumor has been confirmed by Holy See spokesman Don Lope de Aguirre in a press conference this morning.

"We must understand that Christianity has many adversaries today," De Aguirre stated "and not all of them are as nice and gentlemanly as Dr Richard Dawkins."

At first, the unit is supposed to provide armed escort to the Holy Pontiff's plane during his travels abroad but Close Air Patrol duty over the Vatican itself on special events will probably be on the table as well. As for the choice of aircraft nothing has transpired yet, but it will be a mix of V/STOL close-air support fighter-bombers and high-performance interceptors.

The public announcement seems to be in line with the new "transparency" politics initiated by Pope Francis, especially after the revelation that the Swiss Guard has been operating a Special Forces unit codenamed "Heiligenkreuz" since 2001.

Inquired as to how NATO would respond to having an independent military airforce operating through its space, an unnamed high official said: "You mean we'll finally have some serious air defence over here? Good!"

Nice try ! :)

Dig a silo into Piazza San Pietro, with an elevator leading to a huge complex of underground hangars holding dozen of squadrons under the pontifical city of hi-tech VTOL. Oh and build a nuclear reactor deep in the tunnels to make the Pontifical State autonomous.
