Hello,

I am trying to assemble LOP in a DRO around the Moon. I sent PPE in a stable DRO around the Moon. Now I want to send the HAB module to it. I am following this video:

The problem now I have to reference the Moon in Map program, but when I set it I can't target PPE. I can target it only if the Earth is the reference.

My plan is to set the line of nodes above my periapse (Not sure if this useful), then make a burn to reduce the apoapsis to 70M. At apoapsis, I'll set the target intercept program to target the PPE. To go into DRO (Without targeting anything) I need to have an inclination of 180 degrees, burn at periapsis to reduce apoapsis to 70M, then burn at apoapsis to enter a stable DRO using Lagrange MFD. I want to do the same with targeting PPE, how I can do it?

Here is a video showing the problem:

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
trying to intercept a vessel in a perturbed orbit (DRO) - sounds like an interesting problem. Maybe IMFD "Map" can be useful?
Can you post a scenario where you are planning the intercept?
Thanks,
BrianJ

Thanks for replay.

The scenario is attached below. It's an Orion docked with HAB module after TLI. The target is PPE_MODULE orbiting in Moon DRO. You'll need to have SLS installed.

Hi,
I had a look at the scenario - and I have to say that I have found no way to even get close to an intercept! We need a navigation tool that can do numerical trajectory propagation for both focus vessel and target (IMFD Map only does that for focus vessel).

So, we need to look outside Orbiter for software to do this.

Although, I wonder if it might be possible to get into a roughly similar DRO to the target, and then creep up on it in a "phasing orbit" manner.

Interesting Orbiter problem, though :)

Cheers,
BrianJ

I agree with Brian in the strategy he proposed. The best you can do is arrive at the Moon in an orbit with similar characteristics as the target and set it up in such a way that your arrival gets you close to it.

SlaveMFD is extremely helpful in this situation, since you can open an IMFD instance "hooked" at the target, showing you its real perturbed trajectory around the Moon using the Map program.

Video of the flight below:

Thanks a million! You are a genius, man!

I'll try to re-do this. Can you share the spreadsheet link so I can use it? It will be better if you shared the whole folder contains the spreadsheets.

Here is the link to the spreadsheet.
To be able to use it, press File→Create copy

It's been many years since I first started it and there are a lot of different calculations in each tab. It was for personal use, so it's not very user-friendly, but hopefully you'll find a few handy things in there.

I've tried to make it in another scenario but I failed.

First I switched to PPE_MODULE to see what's the best time. the result was stage 5 which is ~1.276M seconds away and 93.69M altitude. I switched to Orion and start to prepare. I was ~841K seconds away from PeA. I entered the number in the modified sheet. That gives me I'll arrive after ~1.321M seconds at ApA. I made the burn and lowered the PeA to 60K and 175 degrees Rinc to Equator. At PeA I made the breaking burn which took ~175 DV. But the ApT was ~800K seconds, not 480K seconds as calculated in the sheet! I gnored this and wait until ApA. I noticed that I was moving in and out of PPE_MODULE. At ApA I used velocity match program but I was too far away (80M). I waste all of my fuel trying to go there (Closest approach was 53M). What's the mistake I did?

The orbital period calculation in the spreadsheet is strictly 2 body Keplerian. The 93.69M ApA that you aimed for is so far outside the Moon's SOI that produces that large discrepancy you saw.

If a direct (or in this case 2 burns) approach doesn't get you near your target, you can treat this as any other phasing problem. If you are arriving "ahead" of your target, go higher and let it catch up to you and if you are arriving "behind", go lower and catch up to it.

When you can, post the scenario to have a better look.

Thanks for the explanation. I don't actually know how to treat this. Would be great if you explain it.

The scenario is attached. Orion with HAB and PPE module in DRO just after MCC to 100K PeA at Moon.

Thanks for the scenario, I'll have a look later. Would you mind also posting a scenario before the TLI burn at LEO parking orbit? I don't see why you can't just go directly for the target, so I want to give it a try from your starting point.

I've already done a couple of tests, (launch from KSC on a random date) and so far I've been successful at arriving directly within 5M from the target. DV expenditure after TLI is in the 700 m/s range.

EDIT: I don't have the SLS installed and I don't want to install it just for this. The scenario you posted is a bit confusing with too many vessels in it. Would you mind setting up a scenario with just 2 DeltaGliders in the same trajectories as the "source" and "target" vessels?

Sorry for this. I don't know how to replace vessels. Anyway here is a scenario with Orion in LEO and the PPE module in Moon DRO. Thanks for help.

Two years? to what are you referring? This is a 7 - 10 day flight.

Sorry for this. I don't know how to replace vessels. Anyway here is a scenario with Orion in LEO and the PPE module in Moon DRO. Thanks for help.

Here is a video of the flight from LEO to the target from the scenario you posted. Added a lua script showing dV expenditure and time.

The scenario is attached. Orion with HAB and PPE module in DRO just after MCC to 100K PeA at Moon.

The scenario attached on that post doesn't have a single vessel in a Trans lunar trajectory. Some vessels are landed on Earth, others are on LEO and the PPE module is in the DRO. So can't help with that particular question.

I've been thinking of a different way to perform this flight using two or three instances of Lagrange MFD. I'll give it a shot later and see how it goes.

Thanks for doing the video! I've applied it and I successfully meet with PPE and dock the first piece of LOP!

orbiter_2018-09-28_09-29-29.png

But I didn't succeed with another flight (Deliver airlock module). I end up with 32M away and very little fuel (1000 KG) wasted while trying to approach. I add a 10 m/s and after some time it got back to zero. In the sucessfull attempt, I end up also 32M away but with much more fuel (4000 KG) and when add 10 m/s it increases to 20 m/s (So like free boost). Note that Orion has got 1160dv after TLI burn (After separate from SLS). The scenario is attached before TLI burn.

As I've mentioned before, I don't have the SLS installed, so I can't note the Orion's dv at any point.

To try this, I need a scenario with two Deltagliders in it. One that is the "source" vessel and one that is the "target" vessel. I also need a dv budget for the "source" vessel (which you kind of provided: "1160dv after the TLI burn").

You mentioned here that:
I don't know how to replace vessels.

I'll show you how to do it here, so that in the future, you can provide example scenarios without other people needing to download and install addons that they might not want or need.

Two notes before we proceed:

1. I don't mean to sound patronizing or anything like that. This is just to make it easier for you to get help when you post a navigation problem in Orbiter Forum.

2. I don't mean any disrespect to the SLS team. It's a magnificent, very well made addon and a great many thanks to all involved in creating it. It's just that it doesn't "fit" in my current Orbiter installation and I don't want to have to download it, just to solve a navigation problem.

With that said, let's begin. Here is the scenario you posted. I've added comments on what "stays", what "goes" and what changes. Here is a brief summary:
1. Between the BEGIN_DESC - END_DESC lines, enter a simple description of what the objective is.
2. The solar system in the BEGIN_ENVIRONMENT-END_ENVIROMENT lines is addon-specific, so it needs to change to Orbiter's default Sol system.
3. Everything with a "Landed" status needs to go. No need for those ships in the scenario.
4. If there are any ships attached or docked to each other, just keep one of them. The first in scenario order.

One last step. Here is where you provide the dv budget for the "Source" ship. If you have BurnTimeCalcMFD installed, run the scenario you created, open BTC and set the fuel of the "Source" ship with the scenario editor.
Also add a few kg of RCS. Exit and open the (Current State).scn file.
Find the line that starts with PRPLEVEL in the "Source" ship, copy it and paste it over the same line in the scenario you created.

If you don't have BTC or don't know how to set the fuel, that's fine. A simple "Please set the 'Source' vessel's fuel for a dv of x m/s" will be enough.

There is no need to do any of this for this scenario, since I've already done it. As a dv budget for the "Source" Deltaglider, I am using 3150 (typical Earth-Moon TLI burn) + 1160 (which you provided in the previous post) = 4310 m/s.

Now a question, Why is your parking orbit like this?
NrT9BE.jpg

Can you walk me through your launch process? Why select this particular date to launch and why this particular parking orbit?

Thanks for posting the way. Sorry for any inconvinience caused.

I attached the wrong scenario . This is in the half of TLI burn. The correct scenario is attached below. The reason of the time is because it's the scheduled time for the airlock module.

Thanks, much easier and cleaner to work with now. You didn't enter the correct fuel, so I'll use the 4310 m/s posted previously.

The reason that I am asking is this:
LljAP0.jpg

As you can see in the left, the Moon is ~ 90° away from the intercection of the parking orbit an Moon orbit planes. That means that it will get there in ~7 days. A normal (non-free return) trajectory from LEO to the Moon takes about 5 days.

The RInc is small enough, so I can add a bit of plane change in the TLI to push the node closer. Anyway, I'll give it a try some time later and get back here with the results.

---------- Post added at 22:31 ---------- Previous post was at 18:17 ----------

Here is the latest video. The flight was similar to the previous one with a slight difference. I chose the Node as my "waypoint", instead of the periapsis, since it was closer to the target's periapsis. Other than that the mission was pretty much similar to the one before with a slightly higher TLI 'cause of the planes misalignment.

A single burn from LEO got me to less than 7000 km away from the target, with no MCCs on the way there.
Rendezvous occured in 8 days, 20 hours using a total dv of just under 4 km/s.

So the Orion having 1160 m/s after the TLI can definitely get there.

(Video still uploading, will be available in ~30 minutes from the time of this post).

If IMFD's map prediction doesn't seem to be stable in your scenarios, remember that it works better with Nonspherical Gravity switched ON.
