Folks- I know a lot of past monkeypox data shows it’s less transmissible. But have we seen a simultaneous multi country outbreak of monkeypox like of the degree of the past week before? No. Something is different. Something has changed with the virus. Let’s be precautious.

Paris (AFP) – Several cases of monkeypox have been detected in North America and Europe since early May, sparking concern that the disease, endemic in parts of Africa, is spreading.

Most people recover within several weeks and monkeypox has only been fatal in rare cases.

There have been thousands of human infections in parts of Central and Western Africa in recent years but it is rare in Europe and North America.

France declared its first case on Friday.

I was given a bunch of vaccines that don't show up on my vaccine record when I enlisted in the U.S. Army I think Small Pox might have been one, but I really don't know WTF they injected me with. Could have been praying mantis DNA for all I know.

organization Vector (the world's first vaccine against Covid-19 Sputnik-V) claims that they have been working on this virus for a long time

“Because all poxviruses confer very good cross-immunity, the vaccine given to humans against smallpox also worked against monkeypox.”

Same here, but I suspect, smallpox wasn't among them.

Had my first Smallpox vaccine the early 1950s, then again twice in the U.S. Navy, boot camp, then a couple years later. Also, found out I was allergic to vaccines for typhus and yellow fever.
I do wonder about the wisdom of stopping this vaccine even though they think smallpox no longer exists.
It would be interesting to see how many of these monkeypox cases were previously smallpox vaxed.

It seems the smallpox vaccine is 80% efficient, which is good. Same here, that vaccine was mandatory for newborns until 1979. Then it was considered useless. Maybe things will change again.

At least when I was vaccinated against smallpox, the vaccine was applied with a kind of small knife by placing 2 stitches under the skin. This almost always gave two pockmarks about 5 mm in diameter with the first vaccination, much smaller or no reaction at all with the second vaccination.
From 1976 on this was no longer mandatory in Germany.

Contrary to my parents, I have no such mark.... but we also got much better vaccines later.

I was born long after the disease has been eradicated. AFAIK from the mandatory program was closed almost immediately after the eradication date, and the remaining people vaccinated against it are the lab workers on the class-4 labs containing the only remaining samples of the virus, and certain military personnel from certain countries.
