Well, I never knew...

I remember reading a late 60s/early 70s thriller type novel built around a similar exercise. Cannot remember who the author was but the cover depicted a Vulcan overflying New York.

There was a real life situation in Belize(British Honduras) that had two Blackburn Buccaneer aircraft to make a flag waveing over Belize City.

In 1970, having increased its complement to 14 Buccaneer S.2s, 809 embarked in HMS Ark Royal and, from 1972 onward, became the last Royal Navy Buccaneer squadron following the disbandment of 800 Naval Air Squadron. In 1972, Ark Royal and 809 RNAS were despatched "with haste" from the North Atlantic to 'show presence' over British Honduras, now Belize, in the face of neighbouring Guatemalan threats to invade and invade Belize. Steaming hard at 27 knots, and when eventually off Bermuda, two Buccaneers were launched along with two more 'buddy tanker' versions to make one of the longest journeys of its type.[5] In a six-hour round trip the two Buccaneers 'showed presence' over Belize and made the Guatemalan government, with its P-51D Mustangs and limited ground forces, hesitate long enough for other events to intervene.
From here.

Its not clear if the UK got permission to use US airspace en-route. Very dangerous if they got detected, and intercepted.

1800 miles, and close to Florida and Cuba.

Phoenix Squadron - Rowland White
January 1972: the tiny outpost of British Honduras is threatened with imminent invasion by battle-hardened, US-trained Guatemalan paratroops. Britain's response must be immediate and decisive. But there is only one deterrent the government can offer: HMS Ark Royal, once the Navy's most powerful warship, now a white elephant on the verge of being scrapped.

To save the small colony, she must launch a pair of Buccaneer fighter bombers on an unprecedented long-range mission. But first the old carrier must make a high-speed, 1,500 mile dash across the Atlantic towards the Gulf of Mexico. The odds of arriving in time are very slim indeed...

Drawing on extensive first-hand accounts and previously unseen, classified documents, Rowland White has pieced together one of the most audacious and thrilling missions of post-war British military history.

Same Author as "Vulcan 607"
