In 1976, when still I was a child, I naively believed that in 2001 we would have really been in resident space stations / cities and we would have have populated satellites and planets, just like in the Kubrick's film. I'm afraid that we'll have to wait quite a lot for that. In anyway, here some pictures from books that I loved (still I do), that depict a 2000 not very different from A. C. Clarke's one. The first pictures of Stewart Cowley were released in 1976, and his books from 1978 to 1980.

That one in foreground resembles a bit of DeltaGlider, doesn't it?

It seem to me that James Cameron got the idea of Avatar from this...

Wow thanks for posting this, brings back great memories :)

I remember looking at concept art of ion-propulsion space probes and I was very happy to, 20 years later, see that they had become reality (DS1). Some of the above ships are indeed, very familiar and have evidently inspired movie ships of various sorts.

The 'cruiser' sized ship in "Defence of Terra" looks like a Star Wars Carrack-class. The crashed 'corvette' looks like the Mandalorian assault fighter and the one hovering over the pyramid just reeks of Stargate SG-1 deja vu.

Which is totally awesome :3
