ANNOUNCEMENT:
Since it looks like OFMM is entering Development Hell, we've come up with something to do in the meantime.

This is OFMM Lite, a series of "non-canon" Mars expeditions to fill in the development->flying gap for the rest of us non-developers. These missions will take place much sooner because they will use existing addons, including old favourites that were previously removed from the project (all you Ravenstar fans, you... ;))

Obviously, the next step is to make suggestions. Get to it! We've got arid oxidised planets to explore!

*drunkard stands up* :salute:I'm a pilot, I can fly...

:rofl:You beat me to it... But you can count me in.

How unrealistic can we make it? We could return to the James Cook for the transfer ship, haul some attached station modules and some DGIV's packed with UGCO inflatable modules for the ground habitat.

James Cook is exactly what I was thinking. :)

Do you know anything about Universal Cargo Deck? Could we use that to bring cargo, as well as the docking ports?

Somewhere, but not here.
I'll need some training on interplanetary flights to MARS, but otherwise count me in.

You guys already signed up!
What I wanted were suggestions about what you wanted in these missions! Addons you'd like to include, things you'd like to do that the official OFMM excluded, etc. This is a whole lot looser, because I'm expecting multiple flights.

As much as you want  Year 1970, Warp drive, unlimited fuel... what else... XR2..

Just to get everyone thoughts rolling, how about 2 'stations' where you have inflatables that will travel from place to place (like on one side of a crater to the other) Drivable or XR2 it.

How about setting up Dan's Prelude bases in packable 1.3m^3 boxes  (I think I already have done this..)

Warp drive?
I'm not a sci-fi-addon-hater (heck, I have an account on RTF), but why bother doing OFMM with a warp drive? That just kicks out any pilots who want to do interplanetary travel...

Well, no warp drive, but...can we include KYAPUTEN Murasa? :D

attachment.php

(I consider this image a failure, BTW, which is why I didn't post it like a week ago)

Anyway, from what I understand of your post, (since I missed the IRC party) we're going to start with less complex Mars missions and gradually replace parts of them, until they become the real OFMM? Well, I guess it's good to keep the fire burning, so to speak.

I say let's play substitutes. Beta Sidemount, Beta SkyCrane, use stuff as placeholders, use :probe: for the stuff we don't have. But I want to keep the mission planning intact.

So let's take Deepstar and call it the MTV, like I did.
Lets do this thing!

...was emphasizing how unrealistic we can be, not really saying what exactly we are going to do or using, that's your choice

Rowr?

There was no party. I'm going by the seat of my pants here, mate.
The idea isn't so much to phase parts of OFMM in so much as have fun flying Mars missions while we wait for the hardcore stuff to churn through.

Sorry, I seem to be missing sarcasm.dll. I gotta go reinstall.

Wait?
What do you mean, wait?
We're the ones doing it! Be it mesh-less, bug-infested, Unfinished Fantastic Object OFMM, I think Urwumpe puts it best here,
"Me want building!"

(...Sorry. As Project Manager of Luck, I'm practically the mission cheerleader.)

Er...righto.

Anyway, may as well do the James Cook first, because it at least has 2 votes. So that's the mothership down, so for the landers: DGIV or XR2? (My vote is with the DGIV)

Also, the other six docking ports need filling. Perhaps four could be reserved for space station modules, and the other two for large cargo landers (drop those onto Mars and then fly the winged landers down to join them)?

Oh, you know me. Ravenstar all the way. :) (I can argue your ejection argument to the ground.)

Seriously though, the winged spaceplanes don't seem good as landers. Before, I intended the XR2 atop the XL70 for crew transport to and from Earth, which would then return, to save a lot of deltaV.

For a Mars lander, I say [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=2717"]Pegasus Ares[/ame] or the [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=4087"]MPL from TIPTS. [/ame]For the "MTV" I would really be more for the Interplanetary stack as it includes NERVA2.

What is the progress of the Skycrane? I thought it was moving along well before. It's a very unique and powerful craft, that is totally awesome and we MUST HAVE.
OK rant over.

For HLV: Sidemount is good, right? If not, some variation of Jupiter or DIRECT.

I know, maybe too realistic, but really, I don't want to see the whole merit of OFMM go to waste. One person can set up a DGIV and James Cook flight to Mars. I know Izack here already did. But OFMM is real.
We choose to do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard.

Well, this is going to be done several times with different vessels, so let's not get too hasty, eh? ;)

Nevertheless, your arguments are valid (except I like ejection seats...). I don't want or mean to throw all of OFMMs discussions and planning out the door. I just want some of the bored members to have some fun.

I didn't pick XR-2/DGIV because they're winged, but because a lot of people like to fly them, and they're well-made craft.

Also, the lander module (as well as a lot of other pieces) from Momo and Jekka's HLV Moon Base (thanks by the way to PhantomCruiser and Voyager for pointing it out to me; I'm having lots of fun with it) would be really nice to integrate.

I think a less intense and more fun OFMM would be cool. I'm in! :salute:

EDIT:
I would like to clarify that I'm new to orbiter (>_> you can tell by the postcount...). I'm pretty good at transx though.
