That's what Spaceway should have been, if it was in continuous development all these years, and up to date with modern capabilities and techniques.
Making something like that is a lot of effort, both in programming and in developing.
It won't happen to Orbiter just out of the blue, on pure enthusiasm of a few add-on developers working in spare time.

Typically the game I will spend thousand of hours flying around, exploring the vastness of these (hopefully) different worlds.
Reminded me of Space Engine quite a bit, without the science in it. Still pretty cool for what I watched.

Heard about it some time ago, and was pretty amazed at the level of graphical sophistication the engine has reached in a very short time...
But that alone doesn't make a game yet. And we know pretty much nothing about what the actual game will be like. I'm looking forward to it, but I'm not building up too much expectations. It's one thing to make a great procedural engine, it's another to make a great game. It's not like the second would be more difficult than the first, it's rather that it usually takes a very different kind of person.

I think this is a exploration game, and has no real goals in it; I suppose you will have achievements, but will not be forced to get them.
Think of it like Minecraft: you spawn in a unique world, explore around and mine: this is your main activity in this game. But then what? You can either build a ginormous castle, or make autonomous machines with redstone, it's up to you. Space Engineer is quite the same, either build the most beautiful ship, or take down as many military escorts as possible, whatever you please.
In No Man's Sky, if a great diversity is achieved, you'll have achievements like finding a rare specie, hidden landscapes, and find out what are those "Tets" (a la Oblivion) for.
As always, great potential as a game, already beautiful game engine. I guess we're now playing the waiting game ...

Looks like compressed Spaceway with proper graphics and more props.
Having made demo videos of this kind before, i can't shake the feeling that there is emptiness behind the scenes.
That is, what you see in the video is all there is, game wise.
I really wonder what they did to make it into an actual game, since all the "infinite" and "procedural" buzz wears out in 5 minutes to an hour, and you'll need something else to get the player to stay and have fun.

I've been following this pretty closely lately, and was going to blog about it when we have a release date. Which I kind of expected to be at E3. It was frankly the first time I was mildly excited about E3, but I also wasn't too surprised when they didn't announce the exact release date yet.
Instead, Sean used his stage-time to... just play the game. I'm not quite sure, but I don't think that kind of thing happens often. I mean, it's the main stage... They're already the only indy-studio to ever get the main stage at E3 (well, the first time they got it, anyways, which wasn't this year). The game is still generally announced for the 3rd quarter this year, so maybe they'll still make it until september.
So far I have scraped together pretty much every bit of information available. From what I can tell, it's pretty much going to be "classic Elite meets Starflight in procedural goldenage-era scifi concept art generator". It'll definitely get my money. Probably the only money I'll spend on games this year appart from Darkest Dungeon.

This is extremely missleading, and somewhat of a disservice to the artists involved in the game. In fact, probably the really revolutionary thing about NMS is that it's the first time that fully procedural graphics are developed under supervision of an actual art director who tells the programmers how to make stuff look good. The algorithms don't primarily emulate physics, they emulate art. Here's a video of Grant Duncan, the art director of No Man's Sky, talking about it a bit at GDC:

That was a fascinating presentation. I'm in awe at the amount of work that these folks have put in to this. Being more of an explorer, I look forward to playing it.

I know this game had a rough release and it has gotten some flak that the devs lied but that's besides the point. My point being is that it was released last week and I want your guys take on the game. I have played it for a week and I havent had any problems with it so far.

I was really interested, but both the requirements and price left me in the dust. Simply can't afford it now, will wait 'till it costs as much as Spore on Steam
.Nevertheless I'd too be interested in reports of folks here. Do the bad reviews out there paint a realistic picture?
Probably not, as all the people who would leave good reviews are too busy playing the game...
