I recently downloaded the latest Orbiter 2024 from the github page. Earth and few other planets complained about missing textures and I tried searching them out. I found this website:

And I downloaded Earth:
Earth L11, L14 zip file

I tried extracting but the program still said missing texture. I wanted to download 2016 high resolution textures but they are too big and unfortunately I don't have internet or disk space for this. Can I and how do I use the textures for 2010 in 2024. The content of the downloaded Earth L11, L14 zip file (named as Earth091124_11_14.zip) are:

Earth091124_11_14.zip/
Textures2/
Earth_cloud.tex
Earth_tile.bin
Earth_tile.tex
Earth_tile_lmask.tex
If there is a 2016 version but low texture and smaller (<1GB) 😅I would love to get that instead.

Well, you would need to convert those into the new texture tree format. Maybe somebody with more experience for that can tell you how to do that yourself, the tools aren't simple.

Also, you could try fetching the high res textures for Earth from Bittorrent P2P. I don't know how many are still seeding, I retired my old NAS years ago.

You need to know that the way Orbiter handles planetary textures has been modified in Orbiter 2016. So you can't import planet textures from 2010 into 2016 (or 2024), you have to convert them to the 'QuadTree' system. It can be done, but you have to get familiar with that system.

Hello All you Beautiful People! (;))

Would be great if someone(s) with the expertise could convert the 2010 textures, cos I still can't get my head around it,,,,
Appreciate it's no "5 minute" job though! 🙏

Actually this happened to me. Did you download the .zip in the Assets part of the latest release? If you did, (at least in my experience,) those don’t contain textures, which is why they’re so small. You have to download the cdn.openorbiter.space link above the Assets drop down.

That's part of the problem, we don't have many people around having that knowledge. I don't. @Face did, I don't know if he is still around though. He wrote a command line tool to do it actually. I'd say search the Forums extensively, because these questions already have been discussed a couple of times in the past.

I'm still lurking, but basically lost interest a long time ago. I also don't remember much of the minutiae of the conversion process, other than that old-style tiles still show up somewhat, but basically "shine through" the terrain. But yeah, there should be a ton of info in the dedicated threads around.

For "Base" Tiles take a look at:
Orbiter2016/Doc/PlanetTextures.pdf, chapter 9 "Converting surface base tiles"
It's basically "just" changing names and file structure, but the process looks a little complicated.

Thanks. But is this file also in 2024 or do I have to download 2016 (where do I even find that)

Sad to hear you've "lost interest".
Your contribution was expert and great.

Yeah, no worries, people often simply move on with life, and this is exactly what happened to me. And fortunately, since this is a forum, nobody has to announce his departure.
Rest assured I'll keep on lurking and chime in from time to time.
