You can try putting Orbiter on the list of "allowed programs" in your firewall software, if simply forwarding the port itself doesn't work. Once UDP synchronisation takes place time acceleration will be close to normal.

It's possible to modify the contrast of the textures but be warned there are A LOT of terrain tiles. Poke at the Textures2 folder and look for the earth_ textures :) If you can find a program to batch-modify the textures' contrast and brightness all at once your problems are solved, otherwise...
