Red giant star Betelgeuse mysteriously shrinking

Always good for a dose of perspective, Phil Plait weighed in on this a couple days ago: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2010/06/01/is-betelgeuse-about-to-blow/

    What are the odds?

For what it's worth I started with the "Ready to launch to ISS" scenario which comes with XR2 and took off into orbit heading pretty much due east from there.

    What are the odds?

A very unlikely thing has happened.. I decided to make a quick trip to Mars and back. I wait for the window, launch, get into orbit, set up a flight plan, burn for orbit eject and off I go. I set up an initial time acceleration of 10000x to watch Earth fade away to a pale blue dot when WHAM...

    Question Mars Level 10 Textures

How close to Mars are you looking? I notice that in Orbiter 2010 at least, you need to get close to the planet before it switches to the higher resolution texture. So zoom in and see if it switches at all. You won't notice it if you can see the whole planet in the view. In my case, I was zoomed...

    Flight Question Landing on Mars

Hello, I am interested in what sorts of Mars approaches/landings are possible? I usually use a method similar to landing on the moon but have trouble maintaining attitude in the atmosphere so I do the burn up between 80-120km alt resulting in an enormously long vertical descent, spending a lot...

    Orbiter "wind tunnel"

For what it's worth, this is unneccessary. There are beta versions of the XR ships available here: http://orbiter-forum.com/project.php?issueid=104 For Orbiter 2009 which address just this issue (otherwise the ships are, I believe, identical to the .0 releases). This is a cool idea for a...

Excellent, I'll check that out. Thank you. =)

    General Question XR2 Taxiing

The Ravenstar seems to have an enormous turning radius.. such that it's impossible to taxi around any airports or park it without multiple corrections. Is there an ini setting that I can change to make it more maneuverable on the ground?

Just about finished James Randi's Flim-Flam! After this, it's The Men Who Stare at Goats novel by Jon Ronson.

IMFD No Burn Vector / Autoburn does nothing

Hello, I'm attempting to plot a trip from Neptune down to Saturn or Jupiter. I've set up my trip as usual using Target Intercept, however when I went to execute the autoburn, nothing happened. The Target Intercept looks the same as any other (though the dV does seem a little low -- just 1.6k?)...

    XR2 Alien on windshield

I don't know if it was intentional or not, but the way I noticed it was not from an external camera, but that when switching from cockpit to external it quickly flashes like 1 frame of the virtual cockpit view (from within the ship mesh) and so I got a very very quick glipse of an alien...

IMFD Silly question about Mars launch window

Fantastic, I love seeing revision in action. =) BTW, Wiki's page on MJD just links 3 or 4 possibilities of what MJD might stand for, it might be best to link to the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_day#Alternatives page instead. Good stuff.

    XR2 Alien on windshield

Dahahahahaha.. that was great. I'm resurrecting a year-old thread. Here I am, practicing re-entry of all things, and I notice an alien splattered on the windshield. Awesome easter(hallowe'en?) egg. Happy Hallowe'en.

IMFD Silly question about Mars launch window

Hah! Maybe a more thorough update will be needed to synch the other launch windows, but at least the October 2009 one is right. =) edit: Spoke too soon, someone went and reverted the edit. I guess a [citation] was [needed]. Double edit: http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/mars/marslaun.html...

IMFD Silly question about Mars launch window

Interesting. Well, in this case I suppose the guide/wiki was wrong, and reality/orbiter got it right. Thanks! I'll have to set my scenarios back a couple months to do some real lowest-energy transfers to Mars.

IMFD Silly question about Mars launch window

Hello, After using transx for most of my interplanetary flights, I'm slowly learning to use IMFD for such trips and doing OK with it. However, I'm curious about a discrepancy between orbiter/IMFD and reality. Maybe this is more of an Orbiter issue, but according to ...
