I installed the SS2 addon into a clean Orbiter package to fix my first problem. The sail deploys now, but framerate is 45-40 fps when the camera is pointed at the stars, and below 1 fps when it's pointed at Earth. Every scenario now has this framerate problem, so it's not a computer performance...
