It will never end, given how easy the public rolled over and let governments take away our liberties the powers at be now know they can just keep doing it and the public at large will just accept the "New Normal"

Same here. Some cities had only been using the data of six days for calculating the seven day incidence, lowering it by 1/7th.

We also have some cities that show up high in the incidence order, with almost twice as much cases as the second place. However, it is communicated that this is not the "real" number, because the cases were assigned to the wrong address. This has been up for weeks. I wonder why they can't correct such numbers and distribute the cases afterwards, they did it for the death cases last year as well.

Now we have local lockdowns inside the country, with the west being partially free (and having already rising numbers), but the east locked down. Meanwhile, vaccination program is practically halted due to missing doses and "Osterruhe" (a term and idea Merkel apologized for in Germany, but we do it in Austria nevertheless), with ICU beds reported to get sparse, while local hospital COVID unit is practically empty.
If you ask around here, nobody knows what rules were active yesterday, are active now, or will be tomorrow. Nobody gives a damn anymore. Ergo the lockdowns will not work, anyway.

I agree with N_Molson here: these contradicting happenings enrage people so much, I'd also say its on a knife's edge. Fortunately the coming weekend weather report forecasts rainy conditions, otherwise Vienna would probably see another large-scale demo with collateral damage. At this point, I think people need to see dead people piling up in the streets before they believe anything from the government again.

Well, the world would be a far better place, if people would just understand that you can't haul intensive care patients through the country like cattle (which isn't exactly nice for cattle as well). A country-wide number for ICU beds doesn't exactly tell much about the situation in each hospital or even district.

And I agree - lockdowns only work, if they are used wise. We have the situation, that one city is completely open while the one next to it has most shops closed already. With the result that all go shopping 20 km further away and spread the disease.

There had been a strategy around of producing connected COVID-"free" zones by also thinking about the mobility of the people involved... this one would have been hard to implement (lots of test stations and police needed), but would have been better than this nonsense right now.

Hence they are doing the exact same thing everywhere in europe because "It worked over there and well I'll get bad press if I don't do anything."

I accept the temporary "new normal" because I know that there is no way around distancing, masks and hygiene as long as the majority is not yet vaccinated. Populism, hysteria and anger does not take away the pandemic. A virus is simply not interested in something virtual like civil rights or individual opinions. Even my opinion is completely irrelevant.

What I have learned from the pandemic is that nothing is certain and nothing ever can be taken for granted. We are living on a giant unpowered spaceship, trapped and on our own, that is traveling through space. But the good news is that disasters are never forever. After 9/11 people said that the world will never be the same. People say the same nonsense about the pandemic now. In the ears of my grandpa, who was at the front in Russia and taken a prisoner of war in Russia for 4 years after WWII, all this just sounds ridiculous in comparison. Life goes on. And there will be an earth after the pandemic, just liker after any pandemic or war of whatever.

Not doing anything certainly would not be smart either. Would I do it better? I don't know. Am I smarter than politicians and the experts/scientists advising politicians? Sure not. Do I have a better solution? Also no. This is not an easy situation. Guesswork is always easy. But I'm sure things will look very different as soon as I am in office. I am very glad not to be responsible beyond wearing my mask and keep distance...

On Tuesday, I will get to go with my wife and receive our first doses of the Pfizer vaccine. I will be given the second dose a week before my 35th birthday. This is truly a blessing that I live in this country at this time. I can't wait for everyone else to get their doses and we can get back to being together.

Yes. Just looked at your location, just watched a few MLB games, hm, Athletics got wiped by Astros - all 4 games seemed hopeless. Saw S.Manaea on the mound, remembered seeing him in person in 2017, sitting in Coliseum... who could think about pandemic back then.

We actually just moved up to Portland, Oregon. But, as a lifelong Mariners fan I've been to the Coliseum a couple times a year while we lived there to watch my M's play. Worst place I've ever watched baseball, but what I would give to get in the sun in Oakland right now and drink a few beers watching grown men play a kids game. Hopefully, I'll get up to Seattle in the summer for a couple games once the vaccine rollout is well underway. Be nice to have a distraction and to stop thinking about impending doom at every corner.

We actually just moved up to Portland, Oregon. But, as a lifelong Mariners fan I've been to the Coliseum a couple times a year while we lived there to watch my M's play. Worst place I've ever watched baseball, but what I would give to get in the sun in Oakland right now and drink a few beers watching grown men play a kids game. Hopefully, I'll get up to Seattle in the summer for a couple games once the vaccine rollout is well underway. Be nice to have a distraction and to stop thinking about impending doom at every corner.

"Mount Davis" is quite large, really would be better without it. But 3 weeks later after Oakland, I was in Portland as well for a few hours, after eclipse observations. Still feel disappointed not seeing Mt. Hood, Adams, Helena etc... from the ground (saw them during arrival from airplane though).
