General Question How to walk on a planet with UMMU

I am trying to move my UMMU around on a planet and it is trying to use the RCS thrusters (which is very slow and inefficient since I'm trying to slide over the ground). Is there a way to get the UMMU to walk and move more efficiently?

You should just be able to use the numpad keys you'd usually use to use the RCS to walk around with an UMMU :huh: I doubt it'll help but you could try pressing ctrl + / to disable the RCS thrusters to see if that solves your problem.
 
Tried CTRL + / and that didn't work. If it makes a difference, the UMMU disembarked from the XR2. When I tried one of the UMMU demo scenarios, they work fine.

I think I figured it out... I was trying to spacewalk on Enceladus. The Sphere of Influence on this moon is inside the moon, and Saturn's gravity dominates. So I'm guessing that even though the UMMU was "Landed" it kept thinking it was in space orbiting Saturn.

UMMU worked perfectly exiting the XR2 on Titan
 
UMMU on Enceladus

I was trying to use a UMMU on the surface of Enceladus. I disembarked from the XR2 and my UMMU would only move by RCS thrusters. It wouldn't walk on the surface. I'm thinking that the issue is that Enceladus' Sphere of Influence is inside the planet (Saturn's gravity is dominant), so the UMMU thinks it is in orbit, even though the scenario file has it's position as "Landed Enceladus"

Is this a known bug? Any idea how to work around it?

Pretty much, of course gravity still pulls you back down to the ground... it's just not strong enough to keep you there if you start walking, because you then end up airborne again.

A real EVA on Phobos would be pretty interesting, since walking would probably end up in the subject kicking themself off the surface unless they were very careful... perhaps some sort of system with a "jetpack" and MMU-like manuvering thrusters would be required.
 
I've noticed UMMU not responding as walking and instead using RCS on pretty much any low-gravity body.
 
Yeah, I haven't tried to walk on Enceladus, but on some bodies (Phobos, for example) it's more efficient to fly with the RCS instead of walking. I don't know whether Enceladus' gravity is low enough for this though.
