Okay. I have to admit something. I wouldn't have bet you a quarter that wacked out skycrane things was going to work.

I have never been so happy to be wrong.

Congratulations to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Once again showing us that it is right to dream, it is right to reach for the stars, because when we dream large, and reach far, we can accomplish great and wonderful things.

Unmanned spacecraft totally rock! If this was a manned mission, it would be over next week. But we now have years to cruise around!

I wish there was video from the rover looking up at the descent stage during the skycrane part. Pictures of rocks are cool and all, but not novel. A crazy rocket skycrane hovering over Mars on the other hand...

I was thinking much the same thing. Wish we could have dropped a little drone camera along with the ballast!

No. A 1-week manned mission would be a nonsense.

MRO was overhead and may have gotten some images of it on chute, like it did with Phoenix.

One of the primary reasons we even have unmanned missions is to pave a path toward manned missions. Also, as N Molson posted, it would be absurd for a manned mission to Mars to last only a week.

They are expecting more images from the descent soon, but it will take time.
