So I'm looking for a realistic manned Mars mission add-on. What I mean by realistic is that is relatively plausible with current technology. I've looked at OH and found [ame=http://orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=4792]this[/ame] and [ame=http://orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3248]this[/ame] so I'm gonna try them.
Are there any other add-on like that?

And it's for Orbiter 2003 so I don't think it will work with the current version

I don't know if it works in 2010p1, but what about [ame="http://orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3393"]this?[/ame]

Another option but is not complete and needs a lander.

Other problem is that not wors well with the last versions of orbiter, could need some CFG rewrite

You could use N_Molson's upcoming Roscosmos Lunar Lander for that.
On Mars? Good luck! :p

This addon is interesting:

You have the UMMU re-entry pack. I wonder if it would work? :hmm:

I'm trying to put tougheter a mission like that aswell. You should look into Mars for less, [ame="http://orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3248"]Mars For Less V1.6[/ame] it has some nice habitation lander, and booster stage that that you could use to boost whatever you want to mars, by stacking enough of them. I'm going to use their hab module for setting up a base before any astraunaut arrives on mars. And I'll use the Total immersion pegassus ares for the mars landing, just need to find a launcher in wich it fits

You would run out of propellant far before reaching the surface :p

Also, a martian lander should be able to carry 4 or 5 astronauts, and provide life support for 1 month. Earth-Mars-Earth is quite a long trip, you don't want to spend 1 year in space to land 2 people for 2 days ;)

At least a strong windshield. Some frail parts like nozzles, antennas, radiators, solar panels, need to be protected from dynamic pressure. And should be protected from wind and dust once landed.

The needs of a heat shield also depend of the kind of approach you choose between a maximal use of the aerobraking effect (low descent slope angle) ; or a direct powered descent (that will require more fuel but allows a much higher descent slope).

I think it's a shame on Orbiter to have all the other planets but nothing really to fly to them.
Someone bound to want a NASSP-like mission to Mars, yet find only sci-fi vessels and mis-matched parts from real dreams.

So, why don't we make one?
From launchers to Mars landing and back.
Mostly it's picking a few sets that match up well - launchers and interplanetary parts.
But a lander might need making.

So, why don't we make one?

I would really like to make a realistic Mars mission based on the 1980s US plans using the Space Shuttle, ideally as two-branch project: One for SSU, with a lot of switch-seeking and checklisting, another for Shuttle Fleet, which uses essentially the same payload meshes, but is using a simpler flight model.

Essentially like NASSP or AMSO, just for a Mars Mission.

The problem is just organizing people who support the idea. I feel pretty alone with my wishes, and thus don't expect much for the future there.

A Mars Direct mission or recent NASA Reference Mission would be more likely to be realized.

Using the Reference Mission makes perfect sense to me. I found Artlav's AddonMaker to be very nice for prototyping, if only it had (literally) nozzle bells :)

BTW, how should one realistically model controlling an NTR?

Hi just thought I'd jump in and mention I will release a dll version of my Mars landers (based on NASA DRM 1.0.) in a couple of weeks!! They are more compatible with the Orbiter navigation tools and autopilots. Might be of help? Just documenting the details of the built-in deorbit and landing programs/autopilots.

Regards, Mark

BTW, you can't use a heatshielded capsule designed for Earth or Titan's atmosphere directly on Venus or Mars, and vice-versa... The hypersonic dynamics are different because of the real-gas model that has to be used due to the different atmospheric composition (N2-dominated VS CO2 dominated)... One of the impact of this is the shape of the heatshield must be different depending on the atmospheric composition.

It would be great if all the different ideas were built to try out, scrutinize and refine.

So far these seem well on their way:

But... Phobos first. Phobos (base) first.. ;)
