The Reusable Crew Vehicle is a manned lifting body spaceplane for the Hatsunia Aerospace Science and Development Agency (HASDA), first launched on 2007 August 31. It is launched on the M-II 01 launch vehicle and lands on a runway after a low-G re-entry. An expendable adapter is used for docking with space stations. The maximum passenger capacity of the RCV is five passengers, or three passengers with a few hundred kilograms of supplies. HASDA currently maintains a fleet of three RCVs, known as the “RCV Series”: RCV01 "Hatsune", RCV02 "Kagamine", and RCV03 "Megurine".

There is also a NASA-owned RCV named “Spica” included in the package. It is launched on the Atlas V 402 rocket.

More details are in the manual (*\Doc\ReusableCrewVehicle). Scenarios are located in the "Reusable Crew Vehicle" folder in the Orbiter launchpad window.

Required addons: Negishima Space Center (http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=6424), Velcro Rockets (http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3388), M-II + Negi-5 launch vehicles (http://orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=6438) for the M-II launch scenarios.

Atlas V launch scenario requires Velcro EELVs (www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3462) and MRO (www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3711)

Spa cecraft3 /genericvessel (www.orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=30362) is required for the RCV itself.

AeroBrakeMFD (www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=2139) is required for re-entry.

Disclaimer: Hatsunia is a fictional, alternate version of Japan based on the virtual singing character “Hatsune Miku.” It is not unprecedented for Miku to be associated with spaceflight. The RCV is based on an experimental JAXA aircraft called LIFLEX.

Thanks to Martin Schweiger for creating Orbiter, sputnik for creating Velcro Rockets, Vinka for creating Spacecraft3, Artlav for creating the Spacecraft3 to DLL&C++ converter (for the docking adapter only, because the converter doesn’t preserve exhaust textures), Hielor for creating the Wings3D .msh exporter, and the Orbiter community for helping me in creating this.

It's released! :woohoo:

I wish I could end there, but I have some bad news: the .dll for the docking adapter isn't included, so the scenarios I've tried CTD. I did edit the scenarios at the ISS to not have the docking adapter in them, and I am really pleased by the mesh work and texturing in general, and the VC in particular. I hope to see the missing file soon.

Oh, I knew I forgot something! Going to fix it right now.

edit: just uploaded v0.1.1, which fixes the missing docking adapter .dll + vessel .cfg problem.

I like this small spacecraft very much.

A small tribute: Hatsune docked at Starlab.

BRILLIANT! I really like this, and final approach and landing is A LOT easier and smoother than some other spaceplanes I've tried. Good work! Also, just a suggestion, but maybe you could add some drop test scenarios, like the ones in [ame="http://orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=4378"]Sputnik's M2 Lifting Bodies.[/ame]

Here's the secret: the lift-to-drag ratio is actually higher than what it's supposed to be for a lifting body (it's almost 5 instead of about 4), so it's a bit more user-friendly when landing from orbit.

Oh. You cheater... (Just kidding! ). Still, It's really fun to fly! And unlike some other planes (*Cough* TX *Cough*), I managed to reenter it on the first try. This is a really well made addon! Also, if you're going to make drop test scenarios, would you use a plane already made in another mod, (Like the B-52) to drop the RCV's, or would you use a custom Hatsunian plane that you would make?

Hatsunia wouldn't have B-52s (like current-day Japan, their military is for self-defense only), and I'm not sure if there is a suitable aircraft add-on.

I also have another HASDA-related project that I will start developing soon, so I can't make a custom plane.

("Hatsunese" is the preferred demonym.)

Another secret: the re-entry is easier because there is less lift (in the flight model config) at higher angles of attack, so you don't need to do "roll reversals"/"s-turns" to counteract the lift and bleed off speed. This is the same reason why the XR2 add-on doesn't need to do that. However, it still tends to bounce multiple times off the atmosphere. I wasn't trying to create the most realistic flight model.

I understand what you said about the Hatsunese military, so maybe a similar plane, say a A380. (Probably a bit too big, but there's [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=5236"]already a mod for it.[/ame]) Or, maybe a smaller plane, like the [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=2689"]Lockheed Stargazer L-1011[/ame], which is used to launch the Pegasus rockets.

Really cool looking addon. Thanks for doing the NASA version, still like to see manned crfts fly from the Cape. Having played a small part in the X 38 would be great to see it would be great to see that fly on an Atlas 5 and the X 33 fly from the cape on a Delta 4.

Thanks for this, I just got a chance to try this out.

This is a really nice addon. The NASA version also makes for an absolutely excellent pairing with BrianJ's Falcon 9 addon. My only complaint is how it handles on re-entry, first time was like trying to steer a brick! Once I flew it a few times however, I got the hang of it and stopped trying to re-enter it like the Space Shuttle.

When you say "like the Space Shuttle," did you mean you were trying to do roll reversals or s-turns to bleed off speed? Because I made it so you didn't have to do that.

Yup. That's exactly what I started doing. :)

Old Shuttle Fleet habits..

I don't think so, it makes liber's [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=5834"]Dream Chaser[/ame] (which is also spacecraft3) jitter.
