The news just go around here in Germany, since he was travelling together with the first German cosmonaut Sigmund Jähn on Soyuz 31/29.
Sigmund Jähn is quoted about him as "He was my commander. We had a good relation and often talked on the holidays." He had seen him just a short time ago in Russia (Jähn is also acting as mentor for German astronaut Gerst), already visibly ill.
The Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller said about the deceased: "Berlin mourns its honorary citizen and a couragous human, who was among the first, who took the risk and challenges to open the door into cosmos."
